The N.F.L. for now will continue to let players kneel or sit during the national anthem without a penalty, capitulating to demands by the athletes for free expression but potentially further alienating fans who object to the protests and feel they are disrespectful to the flag and the military.
But, after a meeting Tuesday with union representatives and players, the league did promise to help support some of the causes targeted by the protesting players, including reform of the criminal justice system.
The owners’ decision to not toughen the league’s stance on anthem demonstrations showed yet again the contortions they have been going through to display support for their players while wrestling with the political fallout of the sideline protests that have persisted since last season.

Through the first six weeks of the NFL season, total viewership of games is down 7.5 percent as compared with the first six weeks of 2016.
An average of 15 million people watched games for the first six weeks this year compared with 16.2 million people through Week 6 last season, according to metrics from Nielsen.
An NFL spokesman didn’t immediately return a message from ESPN seeking comment.
That’s OK, you idiots, we’ll punish them financially.

You are just flat out wrong. If I’m a salesman, and i’m capped at $500K / year, and I hit my quota in June, do I just take the rest of the year off? That would be an absurd way to run a business.

For those who have not read the book, the 20th Century Motor Company was a successful auto manufacturing firm run by a man who died and left the company to his kids to run.
And run it they did. Right into the ground. The siblings were a bunch of whiney, liberal smucks who took their dad's successful legacy and drove the company out of business trying to follow some utopian, socialist/communist manifesto. The firm closed its doors and the town around it dried up.
The NATIONAL Football League is taking a lucrative sports and entertainment business, worth hundreds of millions of dollars and is tacking to the Left politically to satisfy the rabble-rousing players and the liberal owners so they can get their SJW juices flowing. Then, by default, telling the paying fans to take a hike if they're not on board with dissing the flag and the national anthem.
This controversy will eventually blow over but the fan base is dwindling and leaving. Only the hardcore will remain and they won't be able to sustain keeping the doors open. TV revenue will fall. Favorable tax treatment by the feds is being considered for elimination altogether.
Eventually, teams will be sold or fold completely. Lost revenue will start impacting players salaries and they will rue the day they broke their golden egg.
Good luck with your new doubling-down strategy, Roger and the NFL. I think that big sucking sound you're hearing from the fans jumping ship, is the death knell of the league methinks.
One trend that they can’t ignore (and may be the reason they entertained these mutants’ protests) is that there are less and less white Americans to even watch their game with EVERY PASSING DAY. Demographics don’t favor their sport in this day and age; my children and their friends have never expressed the slightest interest in football.
