UNDERSTANDING EACH OTHER Sometimes sports become a venue for overcoming racial tensions. Amid anthem protests, pro football has a high-profile opportunity.
Minutes before kickoff for the first round of Sundays football games, the National Football League website carried two unusual features.
Below the usual fare of game-day predictions and fantasy matchups were slideshows of Baltimore players visiting schools with Baltimore police and of Miami Dolphins and the league commissioner doing the same with police in their city.
It was a jarring bit of social activism for a sports league site on game day. The slideshows are the NFLs tentative steps to try to solve its anthem problem. Team owners want black players to stop kneeling during the playing of the national anthem, which has drawn the ire of the president, angered many fans, and threatens to turn off sponsors and advertisers. Theyre also leery of alienating activist players, who have been protesting police treatment of African-Americans.
Its a tough challenge, say both industry analysts and sports-and-society experts. Still, if the league and players can work together to find the right message, it would offer a unique moment when sports could help bridge Americas racial divide.
On Tuesday, NFL owners gathering in New York for their two-day annual meeting will consider what to do.
There will be genuine, interesting, positive possibilities, says Paul Haagen, co-director of the Center for Sports Law and Policy at Duke University. If [the players] have that credibility and the league will work with them, then you greatly increase the chances that there is a way out of this.

Yeah, but the NFL had a lot bigger conservative fanbase, apparently, then other sports.
Ok, the race hustlers are about to step in and promise to calm the storm. But, a nice fat donation to our cause will make it happen quicker.
First rule of holes-——When you can’t see out, quit digging. Guess the nfl missed the memo huh?
NFL owners to meet, with racial divide on the agenda.
NFL fans should be the agenda.
Sunday football was always a way to escape the BS of politics and watch your home team. Now that the players felt the need to inject politics into the game people are pissed and stopped watching. The NFL really did a great job of killing the sport.
LOOK! The police are our friends! Seriously. Trust us. We were just kidding before!
Real Meaning: uh oh, our paychecks are threatened. The owner's equity is threatened.
National anthem knee-takers = millionaire thugs protesting police efficiency.
They sold their soul to the “racial divide”. Now they can build the league “they want” based on that choice. I say, “they want” because I don’t think they realize exactly what they’ve chosen, but it’s all theirs now.
True. It also helped that I am a natural born Browns fan.
Yes, there IS a racial divide: The NFL and its’ players are racist against white people....next subject.
More NFL teams renamed: Oakland Traitors, Baltimore Cravens, Buffalo Bolsheviks, Green Bay Pinkos, Washington Red Guards, Los Angeles Chekists, Jacksonville Jacobins.
Or the Dallas Cowgirl Pussies!
Message to remaining fans: Your beatings will continue until morale improves. That is all.
Local church pastors pled with Jerry Jones to change his tone on the topic. One even went so far as to bring up slavery narratives. Slavery?! These muscle heads are being paid millions to play a game! They are NOT slaves. They are employees of these team owners. If the players have the right to protest, then owners have the right to fire them for protesting on company time. Period.
Instead, the NFL has enabled thuggery for years. What's astounding is that the attitudes of low-life out of control NFL players hasn't torn the league apart long before now.
It really boils down to a few simple facts:
1. As with any business, are you as the owner going to allow the employees to dictate the way the business is run?
2. The NFL is in the entertainment industry and the fans have overwhelmingly demonstrated that they do not want politics or personal grievances injected into the game.
Personally, I love winning, but I'd rather lose with players that represent my values than win with a bunch of thugs and criminals.
What seems to have sailed over their pointy little heads is the rather pertinent fact that football fans want... FOOTBALL.. not social activism. We had eight years of a “community organizer” in the White House. That was plenty for most of us.
But, sure as a bear sh*ts in the woods, the NFL is proving it can be counted on to double down on a very bad hand.
When all is said and done, and the NFL dies after writhing in skin-melting, bone-snapping agony, what must never be forgotten is this: They were warned.
Quarterbacks are dropping like flies and yet nobody is willing to give Kaepernick an audition. You’d think they’d be getting the message by now.
