Scientists explore how climate change may affect mental health

On the surface, climate change is taking its toll on the environment itself with rising temperatures, disappearing coastlines and destroyed ecosystems.

These changes can have an observable effect on people's physical health, but what about their mental health?

A study from March found that climate change can affect mental health following a major disaster, such as hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, or potentially have longer-term effects. While data is in its early stages, researchers say that over time, rising temperatures can lead to increased aggression, violence and depression in a region.

Dr. Susan Clayton, one of the professors on the study from Wooster College, said that while many long-term effects can only be speculated, it's likely that researchers will find more negative consequences.

"I think that the psychological impacts are at this point still less well-known than the geological impacts," Clayton said, "but I think they’re going to affect more of us and there’s every reason to think that they’re going to be pretty serious."

Pseudo Scientific conjecture.

None of this is testable.

If you can’t test it and verify your hypothesis it is an untested theory and is not scientific fact.

Exactly. This is simply propaganda.

Agree with my policies, or bad things will happen!
Pure fear mongering.

Climate change does, indeed, affect mental health. It demonstrates insanity amongst those who believe in it. Since having a problem manifest itself is the first step toward recognizing it and curing it, I suggest that climate change is actually a good thing for mental health.

Additionally, for those of us who do not believe in climate change, it provides endless laughs. Since humor is the best medicine, climate change therefore also benefits the mental health of quite a large percentage of the population.

A guy on the bus stop starting babbling about climate change.

I calmly said to him: “I don’t know whether it is true or not, but I know a lot of very rich people don’t believe it. They keep buying those fancy houses on the beach.”

:-)

“climate change can affect mental health”
Let me guess. Warmer temperatures lead to more outdoor activity which improves health and mood?

A study from March found that climate change can affect mental health following a major disaster, such as hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria, rises in taxes and environmental regulations, or potentially have longer-term effects. While data is in its early stages, researchers say that over time, rising temperatures restrictions on free markets can lead to increased aggression, violence and depression in a region.

A scenario just as likely and just as testable.

I haven’t seen references to Q10, but that is certainly worth checking into due to the obvious parallels between climate changes and chemical reactions. Thank you for bringing it up.

“disappearing coastlines”

Which ones “disappeared”? If one disappeared, wouldn't they all?

I thought we were just told the oceans were receding.

Telling the people that what’s been happening naturally for billions of years is all their fault is making them act irrationally.

Can I have my grant money now?

This is what I learned in grammar school. The earth revolves around the sun. The earth spins on an axis. The axis is tilted. Based on where the sun rays hit the earth while it spins on its axis determines climate.

Therefore, the only way for a climate to change is for the earth to change its angle on its axis. Weather doesn’t determine climate, climate determines weather.

* Tired of not having your research funded?
* Fed up by maintaining high standards of integrity and following the scientific method?
* Jealous of having movie and sports stars get all the lime light?

Well then have WE have a solution for you!!!

Just do some junk science about how your area of study is negatively impacted by Climate Change!!!! Follow our patended system and you are on easy street?

* Funding? You get it!
* Integrity? Forget about it! Just make your conclusion scary. No matter how shoddy your "research", it will not only get published, it will be praised! Actually with our method, integrity and scientific method are actually counter productive! Hide that decline people!
* And what about being in the lime light? You got that to! Science journalists are lazy too and are more than happy to write non-critical puff pieces making it look like the B.S. you publish using our patented system is saving the planet.

But BEWARE of the skeptics. Those who stick to science and deny our patented system could ruin it all. Jail is too good for those traitors...after all...they are ...ahem..."destroying the planet"! And YOU can help put them in jail by making outrageous claims about the damage "climate change" does in YOUR area...so get out there and lie your butt off people!!!

If the weather is nice and sunny, with temps in the 50s and it is supposed to snowy, foggy with temps in the teens, are you going to be depressed? I won't be...

I guess it would effect mental health, but in a good way.

Now, what reason number are we on to see what get affected by GLOBAL WARMING? 😀
