Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Monday declared a state of emergency ahead of a planned appearance by white nationalist Richard Spencer at University of Florida.
Scott made the designation for Alachua County, where the school is located, upon request by Sheriff Sadie Darnell.
Spencer, designated a white nationalist by the Southern Poverty Law Center and head of the white nationalist think tank National Policy Institute, was scheduled to speak Thursday in Gainesville.
"We live in a country where everyone has the right to voice their opinion, however, we have zero tolerance for violence and public safety is always our number one priority," Scott said in a statement. "I have been in constant contact with Sheriff Darnell who has requested this executive order to ensure that county and local law enforcement have every needed resource. This executive order is an additional step to ensure that the University of Florida and the entire community is prepared so everyone can stay safe."
In August, UF rejected a request by Spencer to rent space on its grounds to host an event in September, citing possible violence.
"I find the racist rhetoric of Richard Spencer and white nationalism repugnant and counter to everything the university and this nation stands for," UF President Kent Fuchs said at the time.
What cultural factors, native to a particular immigrant, increase the odds that they will subscribe to that American identity?

Nazis are statist, communists are statist. The state tends to address groups collectively, at the expense of individual liberty.
Death to statists of any stripe. Give me Liberty or Death.
Becoming an American truly, requires adopting American culture. I know people from Mexico who dived into American culture without reservation, as well as Vietnamese who did so. The predilection of the individual is what’s most important.
I know what you’re getting at, that Europeans have more in common with us culturally and thus make the transition to American identity more readily. But when I look at Europe these days, I see a lot of spineless statists and Muslims.
Things have changed.
Those Europeans who do have the predilection to adopt American identity do sometimes have an advantage when it comes to language and cultural references, but I don’t see that as a reason to exclude all others who also desire to be Americans. Language and culture can be picked up quickly if the desire and intention are present.
Identity of the nation? I would say that was forged by the DoI and Constitution and the War of Independence those documents arose from.
And those were forged by men whose fathers and grandfathers were from Europe and whom soundly rejected “European culture.” They were mostly 2nd and 3rd generation Americans before there was a United States.
The ultimate rejection of the whole Eurotard culture was the War of Independence.
