Texans president Jamey Rootes: National anthem controversy starting to affect NFL business

As the controversy around NFL players protesting during the national anthem percolates, sports executives are wary about how it is impacting their business.

Asked this week at the AXS Ticketing Symposium whether the controversy is affecting the NFL’s business, Houston Texans president Jamey Rootes said, “I think it’s starting to.”

While Rootes said the Texans are still filling NRG Stadium to capacity and that no sponsors have jumped ship, he added, “It’s just in feedback we’ve gotten. Like, ‘Hey, this is not good for the game.’ Or ‘This is not good for my connection to the Houston Texans.’ …

“We’ll get through this like we have with other challenges before. The question is how quickly we’ll get back to normalcy,” Rootes said.

Rootes’ comments typify the tone at the conference attended by some of the top executives in the sports industry.

One unnamed exec told SportsBusiness Daily, “We love our jobs because we’re in the fun business. Well, these days, the job isn’t much fun.”

Right now the Texans are a distant second on the minds of Houstonians.

No, they're not. Houston lives, eats and breathes the Texans. Every store sells Texans paraphernalia, every weekend newscast has a Texans special report at the conclusion of the News program, J.J. Watt is constantly on TV in commercials for the HEB grocery chain, half the cars either have a Texans bumper sticker, etc. The local sports reports will lead off with the Astros in the playoffs, but will spend twice as much time covering the Texans. I was getting bored with the Texans and Texans mania even before the kneeling BS started. Now I am getting sick of them.

[The question is how quickly we’ll get back to normalcy,” Rootes said.]

The old normalcy or the current snowflake normalcy?

They’re not enforcing the Rules not the player contracts and therefore the NFL isn’t any fun any more.

this is still a black mark on this league....those pics of Jones kneeling are forever. They might stay in business, but the taint is there...disgraceful.

What I’m curious about is at what point the chickens will really come home to roost for the NFL?

Most of the league's money comes from broadcast contracts, so the first to get hurt are the broadcasters, as they already paid money for the right to broadcast, but they are already getting less advertising money.

When the broadcast contracts are renegocuated in a couple of years, the league will be getting significantly less money. The league will then distribute less money to the teams, who will then offer less to the players.

JUST FOR THE RECORD:

What is his definition of the word “normalcy”.

What must THEY do to achieve it?
What must WE do to achieve it?

Explain, please, then we’ll proceed from that point.

The NFL broke the Rules in the Game Book and now pays the PENALTY!

No place....and I mean NO PLACE is more insanely addicted to it’s football team than here in Pittsburgh.

Yet since this garbage started, the sense of anger and abandonment is palpable. You don’t see near as much Black and Gold around this town as you once did (and when you do generally it has a Penguin on it).

While Rootes said the Texans are still filling NRG Stadium to capacity

I went to the Texans-Titans game two weeks ago. The stadium was 2/3 full. Now Rootes may be referring to the fact that the stadium is sold out. The problem with that analysis is that the overwhelming majority of tickets were sold prior to the onset of the kneeling protests. He can point at that fact, but if there's really a problem, then the Texans and NFL are living off the corpse of a once-great league that is now in decline because of the behavior of both its players and management.

At this point, what do you think the NFL has to do to save itself?
I feels like talking about an old horse I put out to pasture.

The people who really care about politics are split nearly 50/50 with those on both sides despising anything having to do with the other. Entertainment businesses (all businesses, really) have a certain number of potential customers. Call that number X.

Entertainers expect a certain income based on the size of X and do pretty much anything to increase the size of X. Entertainers who engage in politics divide their potential customer base. Instead of growing their customer base, it’s divided in half. X/2.

Therefore by choosing to engage in politics, an entertainer chooses to reduce his/her potential income by half regardless of which side he/she supports.

It takes years and years of dedication to become a professional singer, actor, athlete. For some, politics is more important than the thing they’ve worked toward for their whole life. Others are just too stupid to recognize this simple truth:

Shut up and sing/dance/act/draw/paint/play your sport

That’s mainly the newscasts, they overhype them because they believe being their cheerleaders helps their image & ratings. Houston has so many transplants who are still loyal to their old teams. Once the Texans start losing they’ll drop out of the spotlight again...
