Clumps of ash and soot continued to drift through the air Monday afternoon in the tiny Sonoma County communities of Kenwood and Glen Ellen, though most residents had long since fled to safety Dozens of homes, farms and cars were reduced to little more than twisted metal and ashes along Highway 12, with dozens of small pockets of flame continuing to burn on the little that was left of dozens of properties.
Hassan Zaidi was roaming through the charred remains of the Trinity Oaks subdivision in Glen Ellen Monday, checking whether the house of a family friend had survived the blaze that whipped through the towns early Monday morning.
While his friend was out out of town, Zaidi found himself in the middle of the firestorm.
“I looked out the window and everything was on fire all around us,” Zaidi said. “It was catastrophic.”

I have been to many of those places.
Stayed at Silverado Country Club.
This is really, really bad.
Sonoma County is beautiful. My wife was born and raised there. This is a real tragedy.

My sister in-law just moved here from there in the last 6 months! Some of their old neighbor’s houses just burned down. These are million dollar houses!

Beautiful large houses combined with some modest hippie cottages and even what looks like vineyard worker housing. But it makes a great mix.
I lived in Santa Rosa for a number of years and my son still lives there, so I visit regularly. He lives downtown so he was okay but a number of his coworkers lost their homes. It’s hard to grasp,
Shame it is. We visited that area many times, I used to live nearby, and always preferred Sonoma over trendy Napa. Fountain Grove Inn, now gone, was our favorite place to stay.
One of the pictures shows a barbecue next to a burnt out house with the propane tank inside and it did not blow up.
Wow. Those pictures... so sad.
It’s hard to blow up a propane tank...which is why explosives or detonators are usually required. This is built in, so that a brief but not explosive level high heat can’t do it.
It may be that somebody had left a wood or charcoal BBQ going and it tipped over. I don’t think it was intentional, it was just that these things happen and unfortunately the wind was so high that it took off from there.
My wife just got off the phone with her sister. The house her sister and husband sold there just burned down!
Wife's sister is devastated! They lived there for something like 25yrs, before selling and moving here.
