CBS SF Bay Area News ^ | 10/08/2017 | CBS Staff

NAPA (CBS SF) — Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.

The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.

Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.

Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.

The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

Have you noticed whenever the Ca legislature does something outrageous or Brown trashes President Trump bad things happen here?

I’m sure it’s just a tragic coincidence but...

McCain and Flake are the most hated of all senators by their constituents—that’s from the results of a recent national survey.

Both got elected because they LIE when they campaign and we have too many stupid retirees who believe them.

As bad as this sounds, A LOT of Arizonans are rooting for Juan’s brain tumor, he’s hated that much. Flake is up for re-election next year and he’s going to get his snarky @ss kicked. His GOP rival is over 20 percent ahead of him right now.

Governor Brown?

Well, of course he is going to bring up global warming...that is who he is...but seriously, no state would be able to deal with THIRTY huge FIRES.

Any state undergoing a disaster of this magnitude would need help from neighboring states and the feds...

Sorry, but I don’t think politics really are a factor—even if Reagan was still governor, these fires would be a mess.

Our President has a lot on his plate.

ISIS, North Korea, Hurricane Harvey, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

I’m glad we have President Trump trying to figure it all out instead of the Won or the Hildebeast.

President Trump will just try and get help out to disaster areas without making hay out of it for climate change or gun control.

It’s so good to have someone at 1600 that’s got some sense and actually cares about America.

Hillary cried, threw a fit, threw things on election night.

That is not the behavior of someone who is fit to be the leader of the free world.

What a pathetic woman.

Why can’t she just buy 50 cats, shut up and retire already?

I just find it remarkable that while CA is burning to the ground, Governor Moonbeam is signing a law making it a crime to misuse gender pronouns, signing a law that makes deliberately spreading AIDS a misdemeanor, and is making pronouncements blaming the fires on global warming.

Unbelievable!

Scary thought; however, by that thinking, if events were tied to politics, after obama was voted in 2 terms, what would be left standing? :(

For me? I am not going to pass judgement on any locality, region, or person...I am just going to keep praying...for me and my family, my country, and my fellow citizens who are going through extraordinarily difficult circumstances—in Las Vegas, TX, Cali, and FL. I guess I should include Puerto Rico too.

Just as us conservative Californians are not responsible for Jerry Brown, you personally are not either for McCain and Flake.

We should all be AMERICANS.

No, not judging-just thought it was weird.

I sure hope most of these missing people are just in transit or something.

A guy my son works with is a volunteer firefighter.

Nobody’s heard from him in two days.

I sure hope he’s okay.

Agree...Yikes our President has lots on his plate...And I read the Army is spraying—I even saw a video on Twitter where a helicopter with a huge bucket was dipping it into lake like a ladle and filling with water to douse the flames!

LOL I’ll chip in for the first cat ;)

Oh sorry...No I did not mean to imply you were—altho there have been some from a couple days ago who were...I just think it is tragic and leave it at that...

I, too, hope your son’s friend is OK. Yes, hopefully, many of them may be in transit—I heard cell service is down in lots of areas, and Mon or Tues last I heard nearly 100,000 had lost power...I am sure number is higher now...so that contributes to lack of communication I am sure.

No worries.

Anyway-My son works between American Canyon and Napa.

He gets worried sometimes because he can see the fire burning from his job.

He told me there’s only one way out and if things go south he might get trapped in there.

There’s a couple of guys there that were helping move horses but I think they’re accounted for.

This is so awful.

I want to cry every time I see the pictures or go outside and smell the smoke.

All the lost lives, homes, jobs.

Things are going to be very bad here.

It’s going to impact the economy and the housing market and I don’t know what all.

Wow, I knew there were not a lot of roads in the area, but that is really scary...Can they get people out with helicopters? Maybe he should let someone know his location—exact location!

Yes, this is awful...I cannot imagine what it must be like to live and be experiencing this first had there now and feel so powerless. It is heartbreaking to be watching from afar. Just seems to keep on going.

However, from the people I met in my trips in that area, I am confident that they will not let this get the best of them...strong people...good people. Hoping ultimately it will be better than before—but that is going to take some time coming...

My thoughts and prayers are with all you...BTW, I have son in bay area, cousin in Monterey, cousins & their families and aunt in SoCal, so I really do care a lot.

“These fires come after the wettest winter in Norcal in the last 100 years.”

Yep - all that water causes LOTS of little green things to grow. Which of course turn into LOTS of little brown things after a dry summer. Although this year wasn’t it a little wetter than normal for the summer?

Up here in Seattle we had a dry summer - 55 days without rain - then we had 0.002 inches which stopped the counting for one day in August. (Yes, the decimal is correct). I think it was the middle of September when we had the next rain - but that was actually worth something (0.25 inches or so).

I have never heard of it happening up here, but seeing the fires in California many years ago, I worry about our tree-filled neighborhood suburbia going up in flames sometimes. I can’t imagine what they are going through down there.

You think posts on this thread were bad, you should see some of the posts I just saw on another thread....

Nuke Nuke Cali and then more fires?

Who thinks like this???

I just posted to remind them that Free Republic is in Cali...so nasty and ignorant :(

Made me mad!!!

We are all Americans and need to support the USA—all of it—even the blue states!!

I am in Midwest, and tho we had a very wet spring, September was extremely dry...almost no rain....We are getting rain now—past day...

Must be some sort of weather pattern...South getting hammered with rain from the hurricanes...

One of my best friends’ homes is in jeopardy. He is a vet, has his truck packed with provisions.

No sleep for him tonight.
