NAPA (CBS SF) Wind-whipped wildfires roared to life Sunday night and early Monday across Wine Country, burning building, forcing evacuations and injuring several people.
The Atlas Peak fire was the largest of several wildfires, quickly growing to more than 200 acres near Napa. Meanwhile, the fire near Calistoga had burned several building and sent several people to the hospital to be treated for burns.
Cal Fire said firefighters were battling several blazes in Sonoma County. The largest was in the area of Porter Creek Road and Petrified Forest Road near Calistoga where mandatory evacuations were ordered for residents along Porter Creek, Petrified Forest, Franz Valley and Mountain Home Ranch Rd.
Early Monday morning, the Sonoma County Sheriffs Department said fires had erupted at Mark West Springs and Riebli roads in Santa Rosa, at Shiloh and Conde roads in Windsor and at Highway 116 and Fredericks Road in Sebastopol.
The fires had stretched Sonoma and Napa counties firefighting resources to the breaking point. A call for mutual aid was issued to other Bay Area fire departments.

Build a house in the woods, and if it catch fire, blame it on globull warming. Don’t blame it on what it is, stupidity!!
I was born in Napa and have many family and friends in the area. F**k anyone who rejoices in this.
“the majority of people being burnt out of their house,
are also opposed to controlled burns.
no sympathy from me”
Did you you do your scientific survey personally last night after these people had their homes destroyed and neighbors killed.
Did you drive to the locations these people are now staying after losing their homes and all of their possessions and ask them their opinions on controlled burns?
Your scientific curiosity and tenacity is amazing.
Wow thanks so much for that greatly supportive comment. Really fits in here on this Breaking News thread for those who are concerned about the fires—not to pass judgement. You know Freepers who live in the area, have family or friends in the area, or Freepers who just care that fellow Americans are going through a very rough situation.
Here are a couple clues...
No one except you another insensitive naysayer or 2 has said anything on this thread about global warning as the cause is being attributed to Diablo Winds...But then you likely are not from the area nor have you read the thread or you would know that.
If you were familiar with the area, you would know that much of Sonoma county is farm area, not woods.
A friend just heard his aunts house burned to the ground. Nothing left.
A friend just heard his aunts house burned to the ground. Nothing left.
Wow! So sorry to hear that.
I cannot imagine how they must feel—All I can think is that at least she is OK—in watching and listening to the news, it is amazing that some people were able to get out with literally minutes of notice in the middle of the night!!
Time will help to heal the feelings of loss...
Lots of wine grown in Nebraska. My favorite brand is James Arhtur, and grown in Raymond.
Proposed to my wife over a bottle.
From what he posted, she got out with all her pets and such well ahead of time. But many heirlooms are gone.
They burn like torches.
A “game” my friends and family play out in western Nebraska is “Kill the lodge pole pine”.
Its all the oils in the sap I think.
From what he posted, she got out with all her pets and such well ahead of time. But many heirlooms are gone.
Well it is good that she got out with her pets in plenty of time...From what news said, the firefighters were focused on protecting lives more than property—hard to lose heirlooms. I know we are saving family heirlooms for kids—small things that may connect them to their grandparents and other ancestors who died when kids were quite young.
Again, sorry she lost things that are likely irreplaceable :(
Not yet - but it is something I am want to do with 2 acres of the 12 I own. So Ive done research and attended conferences. At the moment, I dont have the funds to invest.
That sounds interesting and exciting...
I hope to have a farmette in retirement—tho they are a lot of work—no life of leisure for me ;)
There is a large craft farm organization in northern IL/southern Wisconsin—it is sponsored by a group called “Angelic Organics” a farm and learning center—and they also have seminars...Big in mentoring too There is a winery in that group. May want to check out their websites :)
