Have a tattoo? If the answer is yes, its more likely youre unemployed or completely out of the labor force. On average, your income is lower. Youre more probably a smoker, use illegal drugs, engage in risky sexual behavior, have been a victim of crime, and have been incarcerated for committing crime yourself.

Captain Obvious alert.
Tattoos... the ever-lasting jobstopper.
All the years I was in it never occurred to me to get a tattoo. Never entered my mind.
Dont need a study to answer this one. Losers get tattoos. I’ve said for years “tats” serve a useful purpose. They identify people with whom you wouldn’t want to associate. And before you tattooed FR losers dive in about military, different culture. Talking about civilian idiots with ink.
It’s rare to see anyone under 30 without a tattoo. My wife and I had a waiter with facial tattoos. He was probably 35. He talked about all the different restaurants he’d worked in. That seems to be the one profession that accepts this. Not posh high dollar places though.
I think it’s hilarious when the old curmudgeons around here get all judgmental..
I’ve got tattoos, and they don’t seem to be causing me any problems with work or with morality, or with socialization.
Not one tattoo. But I wanted one or more as a young man. I searched and searched and by the time I found something I would semi permanently mark my skin with. (Tattoo removal is better these days) I was older and perhaps wiser.
Golden Rules
A Wise Man once said;
You never gets a second chance to make a first impression.
You’ll never learn anything with your mouth open.
The Book of Proverbs is full of them.
Depends on the person...
I have 1 Tat a discrete Cross on my shoulder, I don’t smoke, drink, never been a criminal, did drugs, nor engaged in risky sexual behavior. And grew up in poverty...
Several of my relatives have Tats, and they follow the same pattern I do. Some have more than 1 Tat. Quite a few females, usually small flowers or butterfly type Tats.
Does that crap study include piercings that don’t leave you looking like a freak? I have 2 for earrings on the lobe of my ears. Most of us girls have pierced ears.
Why?
Lets bring in the color narrative. I am a black women with NO PRIOR EXPERIENCE, red hair, wearing clothes 2 sizes to small for my rotund body speaking ebonics with an attitude, mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ............your hired!
My mom would call them ‘tramp stamps’!
I agree about the judgmental thing. I have never wanted a tattoo, but it may be age related. I do however know that you can never judge a book by it’s cover.
As former CJ Instructor, we teach people that the bad guy is rarely the one you think it is, especially if you are judging by tattoos or physical attributes. For instance: Jeffrey Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and neither Hillary or Bill Clinton have any tattoos....yet all of these people would be dangerous to have known! Obama had no tattoos either, that I could see?
As for jobs, I know a lot of people w tattoos who work everyday in jobs they love! So, although I do NOT care for tattoos, nor do I have one, it isn’t the way to determine a person’s worth! The past two generations have considered ‘body art’ a part of their culture. Enough said!
I’m biased against them in the first place since I have a large unsightly but not normally visible birthmark that I wasn’t consulted on.
A few times I looked into surgery but it was way more than I could ever afford.
I didn’t see “non-military” mentioned in the study.
Also said it was a yes or no question.
Lot’s of successful people I know have a tattoo or three in discreet locations not normally seen with business attire.
And My God, some of them even ride motorcycles on weekends.
As for me I’m tattoo and piercing free because that’s just me.
I agree. A few tats not on visible neck or face are fine.
I dont have any but many friends do. In discrete locations for business.
What a stupid article.
Note to all: Although a college professor with a PhD. used "discrete" instead of "discreet, that does not make it correct.
Thank you, I'll be here all week.
