3 in custody after assault-style rifle found in vehicle leaving O’Hare

Three people were taken into custody Saturday after a driver was pulled over as he left O’Hare International Airport and an assault-style rifle and handgun were found inside his vehicle.

A pressure cooker was also found during the traffic stop, which happened shortly after 8 a.m. as the vehicle exited O’Hare Airport, according to Chicago Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Neither the guns nor the pressure cooker were believed to have been intended for any acts of violence in the city, which will see enhanced security measures during the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, police said.

The vehicle was stopped after the driver was seen speeding by officers as it left O’Hare Airport, police said. A handgun was initially found inside, but a more thorough search also revealed an AR-15 rifle and the pressure cooker in the vehicle’s trunk.

Three people were taken into custody and the CPD Organized Crime Bureau and Joint Terrorism Task Force were called to conduct an investigation, police said.

Police said they don’t believe the pressure cooker was intended to be weaponized after finding food and grease remnants inside.

The driver of the vehicle, a 32-year-old man from Wisconsin, was being cooperative with officers and federal agents, police said. He said he was in Chicago to drop off a friend at the airport.

Police said they have concluded the man posed no threat to events in the city, but were working with prosecutors and seeking aggravated weapons charges in connection with the incident.

All three people remained in custody Saturday night, Guglielmi said.

Police added that while there was not believed to be a threat to events in the city connected to this case, runners and spectators at the Chicago Marathon should expect to see a “very visible presence” of police officers along the marathon’s route. The department has also increased the number of undercover officers working the marathon and will be coordinating with FBI agents, Homeland Security officials and Illinois State Police.

Patrols in and around Wrigley Field and Solider Field will also be increased for National League Division Series games and Monday’s Chicago Bears game against the Minnesota Vikings, police said.

I am familiar with those guidelines. However, I have been told get a CC if you want to carry a firearm in the car...BTW, I have taken and passed the IL CC class.

IF don’t want to take class, then be smart...follow the guidelines I suggested.

Apparently firearm was accessible as it was in the car. My guess is it was reachable be driver or passenger in front seat... If it was unloaded and cased or disassembled, then there would not be an aggravated weapon charge.

They were ignorant and foolish to be at airport this week with firearm in vehicle. Oh and did not help to add a pressure cooker for the weekend of the Chicago Marathon and an AR-15...

[[BTW, am not commenting on whether or not the laws are Constitutional,]]

Didn’t mean to imply you were- I was commenting on the constitutionality of the idiotic laws in the state-

[[I don’t know that there are IL laws regarding keeping them locked up in a cabinet with a trigger lock, and ammo locked separately. I never said that...I was talking about in vehicle.]]

Again- my comment was simply to point out that states erode our second amendment rights by passing laws like that-

[[ you would be in a boatload of trouble if someone was injured with one of your firearms.]]

Life sucks sometimes- but tragic accidents are very very rare- more kids drown in pools and/or five gallon pails and bathtubs than get shot by guns lying around - the point is that we DO have a right to self protection and you can’t protect yourself during a home invasion when your gun and ammo are scattered all over the house-

Where do you draw the line? Crime in cities is rampant- breaking are rampant- where do you draw the lien between locking away guns ‘for the extremely rare cases of children shooting themselves’ and criminals breaking in?

According to the FBI
in the US:
www.fbi.gov
o
One property crime happens every 3 seconds.
o
One burglary occurs e
very 10 seconds.
o
One violent crime occurs e
very
20 seconds
.
o
One aggravated assau
lt occurs every 35 seconds.
o
One robbery occurs every 60 seconds, or 1 minute.
o
One forcible rape occurs every 2 minutes.
o
There were over 2 million burglaries in 2005.
o
An increase in burglary offenses was the only property crime to increase in 2005 compared with the prior year data.
Home Invasion Facts:
o
According to a United States Department of Justice report:
ß
38% of assaults & 60% of rapes occur during home invasions.
ß
1 of every 5 homes will experience a break in or home
invasion. That’s over 2,000,000 homes!
o
According to Statistics Canada, there has been an average of 289,200 home invasions annually over the last 5 years.
o
Statistically, there are over 8,000 home invasions per day in
North America
o
According to Statistics U.S.A., there was an average of
3,600,000 home invasions annually between 1994 and 2000.

The bottom line is that you are far far more likely to be assaulted by criminals in your home than you are to face having someone shoot themselves with one of your guns

I’m pretty sure pressure cookers can be used for cooking.

Agreed, and by itself a pressure cooker is no big deal.

However, their timing is really poor...They are in Cook County—Cook is very picky about firearms...They are at the airport...again security is a big deal at airports.

Oh, and right after the mass shooting in Vegas they are improperly carrying a handgun and then having an AR-15 and pressure cooker in trunk for the weekend of the Chicago Marathon? So lots of enhanced security in Cook County, at Airport and at Marathon...Really poor timing.

Think about it...If there was an explosion at the Chicago Marathon—like at Boston and it was discovered that someone was stopped and not checked out people when they had an AR-15 and pressure cooker in trunk, heads would roll and everyone would be screaming negligence.

Sort of like bringing a sharp tool in carry-on right after 9/11...not very smart to do even if you always had carried a sharp tool on plane for your job...

I understand your point.

I am repeating what I learned in CC class, and they focused a lot on keeping CC holders out of legal trouble. They said as owner, you are responsible for your firearm—if someone who is not causing you to fear or harm or someone in your proximity, gets hurt from your firearm—be it a child or another adult or if your ammo goes thru wall and injures someone, you are liable. If you shoot at a shoplifter fleeing a store, you are in trouble because they were not a threat to you...

We were told that anyone who discharges a firearm at another person—in their home or when they are out had better have some good insurance—NRA and CC organizations carry it. We were also given names of attorneys for legal representation. Said the CC holder will have to go to station, make a statement, etc.

Bottom line, firearms are Constitutional, but they do come major responsibility.

Maybe other states are less stringent.

First, who drives around with a pressure cooker? Second, no insurance and speeding? And guns. No mention of nationalities and one one person was identified, unless I missed it. So, were they Islamic? My guess is yes.
