The powerful National Rifle Association on Thursday backed "additional regulations" on devices that boost semi-automatic weapons' firing rates, like the tools used by the shooter in the Las Vegas massacre.
In a statement, the influential gun rights group's Wayne LaPierre and Chris Cox urged the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to review the legality of so-called bump stocks. They stopped short of pushing Congress to pass a bill banning or regulating the devices.
Still, the NRA's support for more regulation of bump stocks could give Republican lawmakers more breathing room to pass a bill regulating them.
The statement came as bipartisan momentum for regulating the devices built on Capitol Hill.
Asked about the growing momentum for a ban on bump stocks, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president is "open to having that conversation," but stressed that Trump is "a strong supporter of the Second Amendment," and that any discussion of gun laws is premature.

“I think the NRA is planning to trade this “bump stock” ban for approval of suppressor legalization, just as soon as the furor dies down in a few months.
Liberals will be gaining something stupid and worthless, and we will be gaining something of real actual value.”
“But I think we will have to see how this pans out. The NRA is not stupid.”
We’ll see. Time will tell if they have grown a spine with a brain on one end, or if it is a case of SSDD.
One thing that I have always adored about Free republic is the vast quantity of thoughtful and informed analysis and information about a multiplicity of subjects. I am EXTREMELY disappointed about much of the bump fire stock controversy. Much of it sounds has though it was promulgated by the ignorant gun grabbing left.
I am a 2 tour Vietnam infantry combat veteran, and a member of the Illinois National guard for 26 years, to include service in iraq and the first Gulf War. I was a certified Illinois State Police Firearms and Defensive tactics instructor, and a member of Special Reaction and SWAT teams. I have fired hundreds of thousands of rounds through automatic weapons of all types, belt fed and shoulder mounted, ranging from .45 caliber M-3 sub machine guns up to M2A1 40 mm twin anti-aircraft guns mounted on an M-42 self propelled anti-aircraft gun.
I am retired and spend one day a month on the rifle range shooting my AR-15 rifles. When this slide fire device was first introduced, the low cost and novelty intrigued me and I purchased one. It was a bit awkward to use at first, but in one afternoon, after a bit of practice I was able to get 90% of any length burst on a man sized target at 75 yards, which is close to the normal engagement ranges for truly effective full auto fire from shoulder mounted weapons. It is not as useful has a true selective fire assault rifle since it requires two hands to employ, but it DOES have some measure of limited tactical utility for anyone who practices with it. I never really considered this item to be a true tactical instrument, but I did appreciate the ingenuity and thought that went into turning bump fire into almost as accurate a technique has I could use with a true select fire assault rifle.
The battle has been joined. The anti-gun hysterics are in full cry. They will never satisfied until they achieve near total firearm confiscation. The genie is out of the bottle. You cannot stop psychopaths employing bump fire methods unless you can repeal the laws of Newtonian physics. I realize that some sort of regulation will ensue in the wake of this horrific atrocity. But i dont like it one damn bit.
If they do this, then they should compromise by repealing the 1986 Hughes Act which caused the prices of full auto weapons to skyrocket. There is NO REASON for a legally transferable M-16 to cost over 50,000 dollars. You can be assured that any such owner will be thoroughly vetted by the background check that would be required to purchase one.
Yes, those things are both true.
“Not to sound like a liberal weasel, but the founding fathers didnt know there were gonna be guns that shoot 4 billion rounds a minute!!!”

Common sense?
Okay, by your premise, we should regulate specific car features every time someone kills while driving drunk.
After all, it’s common sense!
" Who needs a bump stock?"

It was always intended as a method to dry up the inventory of such weapons, make them increasingly rare so that even criminals would have a hard time getting their hands on a fully automatic weapon.
How'd that work out though? They just buy stolen military grade weapons on the black market, or smuggled from other countries (or maybe even our own government running illegal guns and "losing track" of them. Oops... I guess they didn't count on criminals breaking the law to get what they're after.
I think that “they” always knew that criminals would get their hands on whatever they wanted to. After all, if you have the logistical capability to get in hundreds of thousands of bales of marijuana into the country, you could simply put a gun (full auto or otherwise) packaged in a sealed plastic bag inside of each bale - no new logistics required, just a bit of extra weight for all of the profit you’d get for bringing in untraceable guns.
My opinion is that Richard Hughes just hated gun owners with all of his cold, black heart, and used the opportunity (on a voice vote which, on tape, seems to LOSE) to attach a rider to the ‘86 FOPA to forever ban new full autos. Just to screw gun owners, and just to ensure that the citizenry would ALWAYS be inferior to the government. I’d like to piss on his grave every day, but he isn’t worth the trip.
You can make springs out of leaf stock. Quick! Ban all leaf stock. You can make leaf stock...
Since the Obama administration’s ATF approved bump stocks in the first place, a Federal review could be embarssing to the Dems if handled correctly...
A bump fire stock is NOT required to simulate an automatic rifle. It is a technique that can be used on almost any semi automatic firearm. Search for videos about bump firing on youtube and you’ll see all sorts of firearms being bump fired including pistols, shotguns, M1 Garands, M1 carbines, AK47s and many more with the standard stock. You can even use a shoestring or rubber band to assist. What I am afraid of is the legislation to be so open ended that a guy with a rubber band in his pocket is going to be arrested and charged with a felony of having an illegal device to enhance the firing rate of the firearm. Any legislation proposed would have to have very concise language restricting ONLY bump fire stocks and not “any device” and I really don’t trust politicians to do that.
Yet again we are placating the demon rats. It never ends.
Hindenbug crashed & burned....no one blamed the dirigibles.
2 jets crashed into twin towers killing 3000....no one blamed the jet planes
Oklahoma city Govt bldg was bombed, hundreds died....no one blamed the fertilizer used to make that bomb
Trucks driven through pedestrian crowds in France & UK killed many innocents....No one blamed trucks
In 2014, 3827 people killed in USA by stabbing or beating....no one blames knives of baseball bats.
But EVERY time someone gets killed by a gun, the liberals ALWAYS blame guns FIRST!
Why? Why? Why?

Heretic!!!! Clearly you are a leftist plant for even suggesting such a thing. (thats sarcasm by the way)
Glad I bought a couple of these stocks a few years ago. They actually work great and are a lot of fun but you do sacrifice some accuracy.
I use my bump stock in the kitchen to make meatballs faster.
