Based on the Early Reports, the Las Vegas Shooting Is Very, Very Strange
National Review ^ | 10-2-2017 | DAVID FRENCH

As virtually everyone has noted from the abundant video footage of the incident, it certainly sounds as if the shooter used either fully-automatic weapons or semi-automatic weapons modified (through, for example, a bump fire stock) to closely simulate automatic fire. Moreover, the police are reporting that he had “more than 10 rifles.” He apparently rented his corner room for days and may have even set up cameras to detect when police were approaching. That’s all strange enough, but it’s even more unusual when you consider that his own family apparently didn’t know that he maintained a stockpile of guns.

[snip]

Put all this together, and the shooting is flat-out bizarre. It’s significantly different from virtually any other mass shooting in U.S. history. If the weapons were fully automatic, then he likely would have spent immense sums of money to obtain them legally, jumping through extensive legal hoops.

[snip]

So, a person who’s “not a gun guy” has either expended untold thousands of dollars to legally purchase fully-automatic weapons, somehow found them on the black market, or purchased and substantially modified multiple semi-automatic weapons — and did so with enough competence to create a sustained rate of fire. This same person also spent substantial sums purchasing just the right hotel room to maximize casualties.

[snip]

Given the firepower and the packed mass of people, it’s easy to see how the casualty count was so high, even firing from an extreme range (by the standards of mass shootings.) This was the University of Texas tower attack on steroids, conducted out of nowhere, with meticulous planning and at great expense, from a person who doesn’t seem to fit any normal profile of a mass shooter. There is much we have yet to learn, but for now, this is one of the most chilling and mysterious events I’ve ever seen.

Yeah - the one on the right. Thing is, you just don't slap one of those on and ta-daaa, auto fire - there is practice and a learning curve involved. Have to get a practiced rhythm down for it to work right. He had to have been out shooting somewhere regularly for a while to get it right.

If this guy knows one end of a gun from another I will be amazed....I'm beginning to think that the portrait of this guy that we have may well have been the real portrait. It may well be who he was.A liberal, drunk, gambler real-esatate speculator and accountant.

Those who think he was an accomplised marksman may well be the conspiracy speculators.

Sure will bud,the more I get into this the more I think that the supposed shooter was anything but a shooter.

I think he may well have been exactly as he has been portrayed. That leaves the field of who did what wide open.

Perhaps he went out shooting late at night after getting drunk out of his mind and making huge gambling bets, thats probably what happened.....
If this guy turns out to be the shooter I will be amazed.

There are so many strange things about the story reported in resources that I believe there is far more there but that is not to say a tragedy did not occur just that as pointed out many people acted far from what one would expect in such a situation.

"Think people, look at the evidence. 600 people shot, that is not one shooter."

The first long burst that I analyzed was over 100 rounds -- essentially continuous, full auto.

How many such strings of fire would it take to hit 600 people?

How many such strings were fired? (I haven't heard a reliable count on this.)

Car was still in valet parking lot at the hotel.

In addition to the home in Mesquite, SWAT teams raided another home Paddock owns in Reno, Nevada. Investigators found several pounds of ammonium nitrate, an ingredient used in explosives, in Paddock’s car, which was left in Mandalay Bay’s valet parking

“Here come the “Sandy Hook” conspiracy nuts.”

People who feel they need to own the narrative on large death events are the worst sort of nuts.

An AK has also been mentioned.

Which is basically a .308.

No idea, but if not then you have a “locked room” mystery on your hands.

I’m not a big believer in law-abiding citizens suddenly committing horrible crimes either, but I’m not ready to believe that this man was a law-abiding citizen.

He was a multi-millionaire and I know the real estate market well enough to know that you are not going to get that done without leaving a far more substantial trail than this man has done.

Either you are going to be flipping a TON of properties and appearing in civil records all over the place, or you are going to be dealing with quite a few renters. He was a heavy gambler, which makes it even more the case, plus he was shipping piles of money overseas to the Philippines.

This man is not adding up.

I always say that after an event like this forget about it for 3-4 days and then the real facts will start to emerge.

Agreed. The conspiracy theories, let alone false info, have created a fog thicker than usual around this shooting.

“The former couple jointly filed for divorce on Feb. 25, 2015, and the divorce was finalized the next day.”

“During her divorce, Marilou Danley listed a downtown Reno unit at the Montage on Sierra Street as her address. At the time, the unit was owned by shooting suspect Stephen Paddock. Court records indicated that she started living at the address in August 2013. Paddock sold the condominium in December 2016”
