~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Riley, Kansas

riley2

Fort Riley is named in honor of Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail. The fort was established in 1853 as a military post to protect the movement of people and trade over the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails.

In the years after the Civil War, Fort Riley served as a major United States Cavalry post and school for cavalry tactics and practice. The post was a base for skirmishes with Native Americans after the Civil War ended in 1865, during which time George Custer was stationed at the fort.

The 1st Infantry Division is a combined arms division of the United States Army, and is the oldest continuously serving in the Regular Army. It has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 during World War I. It was officially nicknamed "The Big Red One" after its shoulder patch and is also nicknamed "The Fighting First".

riley4

The early history of Fort Riley is closely tied to the movement of people and trade along the Oregon and Santa Fe trails. These routes, a result of then popular United States doctrine of "Manifest Destiny" in the middle of the 19th century, prompted increased American military presence for the protection of American interests in this largely unsettled territory. During the 1850s, a number of military posts were established at strategic points to provide protection along these arteries of emigration and commerce.

riley5

In the fall of 1852, a surveying party under the command of Captain Robert Chilton, 1st U.S. Dragoons, selected the junction of the Republican and Smoky Hill Rivers as a site for one of these forts. This location, approved by the War Department in January 1853, offered an advantageous location from which to organize, train and equip troops in protecting the overland trails.

Weeeeelllll, I wouldn’t exactly call him spry but he’s covering more ground when we go out these days. He’s a little stiff in his old age but that’s not a hindrance to rolling in catnip. LOL

I guess it grows wild. I didn’t plant it and I doubt any of his family did. I first discovered it was out there not long after moving here. I’d walk around outside and when I came back in, the cats would gather around my feet and roll all over my shoes. LOL

Never thought about attracting other cats. I imagine if it grows here, it grows all over the area. But who knows? Ya might have a point. :-)

I’ll bet that is funny to see when they are rolling all over your shoes. I think I had some in a planter once, but the cats didn’t seem to notice it. Maybe I just didn’t catch them at it. LOL!

It can be dangerous when they do it while I’m still wearing them. Can’t walk without tripping. LOL

Some cats don’t seem to be affected by catnip. Most of ours go bonkers over it but a few couldn’t care less. Maybe Peaches and Ginger are like that. Your planter would have been a wreck otherwise.

I guess a wrecked planter would have totally been a clue. LOL!

As an aside...I just thought about this.

My DIL’s mom is kind of a ditz. Once when she was coming to see her and my son and the grandkids, she decided to bring some catnip to the kitty they had at the time.

Instead of keeping it in the original packaging, she thought it would be a good idea to put it in a zip-lock bag. Weeellllll....needless to say, TSA pulled her aside when she was checking in with the airline and asked her if what she had in that bag was marijuana. She was totally embarrassed and my DIL just rolled her eyes. Typical mom! LOL!

Now THAT is FUN-NEEEEEE!!
Obviously no one knew what she was doing before she packed it in her suitcase or they’d have told her that was NOT a good idea. LOL

Obviously! But she is known for her non-thinking foulups. LOL!

My DIL has many stories of her oopsies. She’s a very nice lady and was a kindergarten teacher, but she totally has blonde roots. :)

She certainly does! Her hubby was a techno genius and she’s a ditz. Sort of Lucy and Ricky like. LOL!

Different time. We were out there for Spring Fire. I was a Mess Sgt. One of my dummies was starting an immersion heater and when it caught on fire from an unclosed fill screw opening leaking, he kicked it all over thinking that would put out the fire.

Of course, since the gas tank was now hot, the gas was spraying in the air and rather that being put out, sprayed flaming gas everywhere lighting that buffalo grass above Funston to the north. It burned real quick in three directions due to the wind.

Another of my dummies decided he would use all the small extinguishers trying to put out grass. I ended up taking a large CO2 and walking into the middle of it to get the tank out and cooled down. I let truck drivers worry about the grass which took another 20 minutes.

I think it was about April of ‘73

I think it was the same year we lost a guy in grenade training — just damn.

I was set up, ready to go, in another window but got a bit distracted. A thread was posted about Adam Ant and I pulled up a video of one of his concerts, which I’m watching now.
That’s my excuse and I’m stickin’ to it. :-)

Yeah, especially since it’s an older video - - back when he was young, energetic, and gorgeous. He’s been back on the road again this year and still sounds good but like all of us, has slowed down a bit with age. I’d still go see him in concert again if the chance arose.

It won’t be much longer before we’re both distracted by our Aussie sea eagles. And Latvian eagle owls, and .....
LOL
