After nearly a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors one of the worlds largest automakers announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.
The acceleration to an all-electric future will begin almost immediately, with GM releasing two new electric models next year and an additional 18 by 2023.
At a media event at GMs technical campus in Warren, Mich., on Monday, Mark Reuss, the companys chief of global product development, said the transition will take time, but the course has been set.
General Motors believes in an all-electric future, Reuss said. Although that future wont happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles.
[Teslas Model 3 has mass appeal. That doesnt mean you can afford it.]
Reuss avoided naming the year when the auto giant will cease producing gas and diesel vehicles, noting that the company is too large to make such an estimate, according to USA Today.

“Death of” has been prematurely announce so many times it is childish.
I’ll bet that new electric Chevy Silverado can pull a big payload, ya think?
FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT with an all-electric car society is next to impossible if the Deep States CUTS THE ELECTRICITY.
THIS IS ABOUT CONTROLLING THE MASSES, PEOPLE.
And if the ls is anything like the sbc.. that’s a mighty long time.
Good thing we took down all those dams and closed all those nuclear reactors.
I am sure that God and Magic will probably produce all the needed electricity.
Where does electricity come from, mommy? The stork brings it, honey.
They do use it in Uklid ore hauling vehicles, which have huge diesel generator systems for power. They are electrically driven at each wheel. They do not rely on batteries, like all the electric cars I’ve ever seen.
The generator is diesel. The whole thing really works on fossil fuel. To run on electricity, electricity has to make the electricity, or wind or solar or fart power.
**** “When the motor goes out I will put new one in. When the transmission goes out I will put a new one in. Etc, etc” ****
Get a 3/4 Dodge w a Cummins and it is just the opposite ... you transplant the engine into something else (and add an Allison tranny)
My 2003 Ram Runs and Works great but everything else is rusting and falling apart.
I can see it now.Its the dead of winter with freezing to below freezing temperatures and if your electric vehicle has the power to run will it have the power to push a car through inches of snow and slush?I seriously doubt it.
There. I fixed it.
Methinks GM is planning to wait out the Trump presidency with its eyes solely on massive government subsidies of electric vehicles with a government bailout backup if/when that fails.
I know the President has a lot on his plate, but it would just be so entertaining to see the electric car business die overnight from a withdrawal of subsidies and its expected government safety net.
Now, if GM can make their electric car focus ACTUALLY profitable, go right ahead, GM. Great. But if they fail, let them fail as hard as they deserve.
“NO GM vehicles for me.”
I said that back in ‘08 when they became “Government Motors” and I’ve kept to my promise.
You youngsters can wave goodbye to the cross-country driving vacation. You’ll be limited to a range of about 250 miles of you crummy City.
Starve!
“Part of it.
The other part is pollution.”
I don’t know how old you are but if you don’t remember the 40’s and 50’s you dont know what pollution is.The air has never been cleaner and its about as pure as it is ever going to get. Maybe some big city air sucks somewhat during inversions, etc but they suck in every other way as well. I worked in downtown Chicago for 17 years up to 19 96 and don’t remember any real bad pollution days except some scattered ozone warnings, Again, I think we are about as good as we’ll be.
If they successfully manufacture one I’ll pit my electric truck against the diesel you speak of and we’ll wager on who can haul the heavier load. Sound like a bet?
Diesel means super duty. F150 is steel.
That said, don’t drop things from stupid heights and aluminum is fine, so fine gm is planning to start recycling beer cans too
Honestly, where do they think the electricity comes from, especially when they prohibit nuclear energy.
Actually, if a power source can be found that would enable an electric car to run several hundred miles without recharge/replacement, electric motors are much better than gasoline or diesel. 100% torque at zero RPM, much higher RPM limits.
Picture all wheel drive vehicles with each wheel hub being an independent computer controlled drive. Great traction in snow, dirt, or gravel. Even greater performance than we are getting out of internal combustion engines today.
The key, of course, is the power source.
