Catalan leader Carles Pulgdemont says the region has won the right to statehood following Sunday's referendum which was marred by violence.
He said the door had been opened to a unilateral declaration of independence.
Hundreds of people were injured as Spanish police used force to try to block voting.

Seems to me that if there are multiple videos of police beating people trying to vote, there’s really no need to fake a bloody picture. Wouldn’t you agree?
The rights of the individuals collectively supersede the rights of the nation. There is no right of a nation to remain the same. The virtue I am claiming is an adherence to rights . What virtue or value are you claiming? The right to use force to overcome people’s right to self-governance? You should check ourself.

I used to know people like you. Unable to read a sentence and comprehend the meaning. Instead they exaggerate to an outrageous level thinking they are making a point. But, they are not able to because they are unable to get past their own defensiveness.
This is true. Catalonian separatists are not as a rule right wing nationalists. They're pro-EU liberals, and while they oppose being ruled by Madrid they have no problem with being ruled by unelected Eurocrats in Brussels. They don't have any problem with mass immigration from the Middle East or Africa either, only with Spaniards.
In this regard they're very much like the advocates of Scottish independence, who hate London but love Brussels, and who detest the English but want to open their doors to Pakistanis and Africans.

Yes - during the Tge civil war in the early ‘30’s. My grandfather fought in it and my mother survived it along with her family. I have heard my share of stories about ‘the catalonians’. Have zero interest to ever visit that area.
The war was about keeping communism out. Franco, a fascist, ruled with an iron fist and thru fear. He backed up that fear. But, that region is very left leaning. However, so is most of Spain these days.
Yes he did. But, he is not without fault. People dared speak bad about the gov’r and if you disliked someone, just let word get out that something negative was said. That would have been a good way to send them to jail for years.
Discouraged by modern day Spain, my mother says that Franco kept crime under control. I say - well, that’s because he was the one committing the crimes! People did live in fear tho.
But, all in all, whether it was Spain or the USA, crime is more obvious since the 30’s-70’s.
Too bad the police and state hasn’t put as much energy and effort in protecting its citizens against Islam.
Franco was a great thing for Spain - despite how the left paints him.
I consider the Americans, British and Canadians that fought against Franco’s legitimate government as traitors who deserve to buried in mass graves instead of honored by statues.
Yes, Franco was not perfect but 100% better than the Soviet supported so called Republicans. He was favored by Germany but refused to get involved in their world war. Considering what the commies in the French Revolution did to the church, that would have been the fate for the Catholic Church had the traitorous communists prevailed.
Catalonians have been pushing for independence from Spain for centuries. Long before Marx came on the scene. It’s in their blood and in their culture. Have others co-opted that very old desire for their own ends. No doubt.
It looks like Catalonia is currently governed by a broadly-based pro-separatist coalition party, but in general Catalonia has generally been further left than the rest of Spain.
I can't claim to be an expert on today's Spanish politics by any means, but my hunch is that it's like the Sweden or Massachusetts or California of Spain.
Yes, if he made one tactical error it was not allowing Hitler to take Gibraltar from the British for him, but it probably worked out the best for him in the long run.
Spain has no safety net like most of Western Europe. You either have a job or you go hungry. Most *cough* migrants that make it to shore from Africa keep right on going to the French border and beyond.
Support for leaving seems to be we widespread across the political spectrum in Catalonia. They pay more more tax than they receive back and are tired of it.
But they are the least conservative region in Spain, so them leaving is win/win as far as I’m concerned.
