I’ve been to China twice in the past 4 months (Gansu Province) and I seen Mosques and boatloads of Chinese Muslims everywhere. They hang out together and the women are distinctively dressed and the men wear tight fitting caps.
My Chinese hosts tell me the govt keeps a tight rein on them.

It is against the law in China to own any book that is not printed in China or that is printed the “traditional” rather than “simplified” characters. You can freely buy a Bible or Q’ran in China if it is the official printed version. (The Bible is the same text that Hudson Taylor Translated)
This may be that simple. These Mooselimbs may have been reading Q’rans that are not printed in the PRC. Assuming that Islam has commentaries like Christians then those commentaries may not be available from presses in China or the quality of the editions may be poor.
CHina has begun to crack down on Islam the past several years.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered ethnic minority Muslim families to hand in religious items including prayer mats and copies of the Quran to the authorities, RFA has learned. I am not sure this is a terribly useful thing to do.
It is fairly common for Muslims to memorize the Koran.
It is not that long of a book.
Add in the Hadith and Surahs and it adds up to pages.
