Moving company says more people leaving Chicago than any other major city

The nation's biggest mover is corroborating Census data showing the exodus of residents from Chicago and across Illinois.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Census released its report that said most Illinois' cities are shrinking in population, with the entire state estimated to have lost 58,456 people on net in 12 months ending in July.

United Van Lines tracks how many people come and go from the nation's larger cities every summer. They found more people moved from Chicago than any other state.

"We're really seeing a trend of a lot of people moving out of big cities on the east coast and the Midwest and tending to migrate west and south," spokesperson Melissa Sullivan said. The Windy City led the nation in percentage of departures in 2016 as well.

United Van Lines' numbers confirm Illinois as a state is seeing more people depart than arrive.

"The places that top our list of destinations every year have either growing job markets or places that have a lot to offer retirees," Sullivan said. "It definitely is a trend that goes beyond Chicago because the state is showing similar trends."

Notably, the Census estimated 40,000, or 5 percent, of Chicago's black population left in the 12 months ending in July.

High taxes and lack of job opportunities often are cited by residents who leave for other states.

City taxes are imposed on already higher Illinois taxes. For some Illinois residents, the high property taxes are their motive for moving (many would prefer to stay but don’t like the taxes).

Even worse is the possibility that they recycle metal to make their own bullets and guns.

Not at all surprising. And,IMO,equally unsurprising would be that the major city to which more people are moving would be...

WASHINGTON,DC

Which,or course,is where the smart people go to get rich.

If all the gang bangers mysteriously died one day, with no locals witnessing anything of course, the city could flourish again and the people previously living in terror could begin to build up their community again.

We need more regulation.

We can’t allow a racist biased mass migration.

Illinois residents should apply for a moving permit or face exorbitant sales tax on Illinois assets.

Oh wait, most of the migration is black. I hear Obama is moving back to manage the library.

“High taxes and lack of job opportunities often are cited by residents who leave for other states”.

They move to a Red state and vote for higher taxes. They screw up one place and move somewhere else and repeat the process.

Homeowners still pay in the form of lost value on the property when they sell to move. Good luck trying to sell when people are moving. We left the state in 2013 and took a 40% loss on sale of the house we built in 2007.

From some population stats I have seen, it looks like many are moving to Iowa. Metro Des Moines and Cedar Rapids have some of the most rapid population growth in the country—businesses are choosing to put their Midwest HQ there instead of expensive, crowded and dangerous Chicago.
