Mike Lindell says there aren't many crack addicts who've become successful, but he's one of them.
"It can be done, people," he laughed.
The self-made multimillionaire and infomercial superstar created the MyPillow empire from scratch in 2004. He did it while addicted to drugs. "People say all the time that's one of the biggest miracles ever."
He's been clean and sober for over eight years, but his path from rags to riches and almost back to rags is an amazing American success story.
It is also one long, strange trip.
From college dropout to aspiring entrepreneur
MyPillow is located in Lindell's hometown of Chaska, Minnesota, outside Minneapolis, a place he's always stayed close to. Back in 1979, "I went to the U of M (University of Minnesota) for one quarter, and I was working two jobs," he said. "I felt like I was just wasting my time."
He quit school and continued working both jobs, including one at a grocery store. "I actually got fired at the grocery store," Lindell said.
He clashed with the manager, but he believes the manager sparked his entrepreneurial spirit. "He says, 'Well, Mike, if you don't like it here, maybe get your own company someday.'"
Lindell did, but only after several failures.

Thanks, I’ve been considering My Pillow for some time, but have been a little wary of the “changed my life” testimonials on the radio. I’m definitely going to order a couple after hearing many more level headed recommendations from FReepers today.
We’ve been looking at them, too - has anyone laundered them? I’m wondering how that works out.
My mom has them ( gift from my dad) and hates them-can’t sleep when using them so she finally put them in the guest room.
My wife picked up two pair of them on a QVC deal and I have to admit they were more comfortable right off the bat than any other new pillow that I have owned.
What’s even impressed me more is that 4 months later there is no signs of the pillow going flat. They are also way more easy to launder than any other pillow I’ve had.
I cringed at the price and would never have pulled the trigger myself - thankfully the Mrs. is a lot more free with my paycheck.
I use one and love it. If $2 a year (or maybe even less because it is put together well) is too much for consistent support during sleep, you probably have T-Shirts almost as old as the ones I wear....I’m still searching for a reasonably priced razor that shaves like a Gillette - found a 3-pack of Barbasol disposable razors, with 6 blades, at a Family Dollar for $5. When my current cartridge starts raising bloody welts, I’ll give one a try.
It has been discovered that some paranoids actually have REAL enemies!
LOL!
