President Donald Trump criticized NFL players who lodge protests during the pregame national anthem, saying Friday night that he wished those players would be released and encouraging fans who are offended to walk out of stadiums.
Speaking at a political rally in Huntsville, Alabama, Trump said: "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, 'Get that son of a b---- off the field right now. Out. He's fired! He's fired!"
Trump said the protests, which became public last year when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick kneeled for a preseason national anthem, are "hurting the game."
Trump didn't mention Kaepernick or any other NFL player specifically during the speech. The QB opted out of his contract with the 49ers during the offseason and has not been signed by a new team since.
"The only thing you could do better," Trump said, "is if you see it, even if it's just one player, leave the stadium. I guarantee things will stop. Things will stop. Just pick up and leave. Pick up and leave. Not the same game anymore, anyway."
Trump went on to say referees are "ruining the game" by calling 15-yard penalties for "beautiful" tackles. He also said that NFL ratings are down "massively, massively" because people prefer watching him. NFL ratings dropped eight percent in 2016 compared to 2015.
An NFL spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what Trump said.

Here in PA Joe Paterno was put on too high a pedestal.
“Joe Paterno is God” is what my Penn State student buddy used to say way back in 1980 and he didn’t like the notion either.
But trashing him and hounding him out of his job for what Sandusky did was going too far.
Paterno acknowledged he made mistakes. We all do, we are sinners.
Joe Paterno did a lot of good work with a lot of young men and we better see that instead of being a bunch of witch hunters.

If you read carefully the only source for that quote is some random guy on Twitter.
I believe Jerry respects the flag but nothing in his past behavior makes me think he would put a player's character flaws ahead of winning.

Trump probably caught a part of Rush talking about the lack of attendance at some of the NFL games, so far, this year. I don’t watch much football anymore (I often just do not have enough time, at those times), but, some glimpses I’ve seen support Rush’s contention.

In the English Premier League, games are usually Saturdays, Sundays and a few Monday games per week, so viewership on TV and at the stadium will be very predictable. The NFL should drop the Thursday night games and the games in London so they can concentrate the games on times people are familiar with: Sundays at 1 and 4 pm (Eastern), the Sunday night game and Monday night game. The Thursday games should only be limited to the start of season game with the Super Bowl champion and the two traditional games on Thanksgiving Day.
Doesn’t seem like it was that long ago they were on Sundays...and at most monday night football.... Heck why would I know since I don’t watch anyway....I just recall Sundays at church even the Pastor was eager to finish up so we could all get home and eat before the game...Crock pot roasts made that possible! LOLOL

The NFL has painted itself into a corner—they are in the process of experiencing a “teaching moment” as a significant number of their former fans and viewers “take a knee” and give them the middle finger.
I have no problem with someone NOT saluting the flag. Various faiths and philosophical beliefs support this stance. HOWEVER, there is a difference between standing quietly and respectfully and taking an active stance against it.
Love this president, and not in a democrat sort of way.
