I think what President Trump is doing here is in a sense another version of the “Thunder Run” tactic our soldiers used in Iraq.

For those who don’t remember, when Baghdad fell we had a major problem. How to clear thousands of Saddam Hussein followers out of a densely-packed urban area. There had been predictions of tens of thousands of American casualties if we had to go house-to-house through the city.

What they did was very clever. They had these “Thunder Runs,” where they ran huge convoys of heavily-armored vehicles right through the city. They had loudspeakers, and they used them to yell insults and taunts. They basically said “here we are you maggots, come get us, show us what big men you are.”

And a lot of them did so. They attacked the convoys from every angle, including with suicide bombs packed in cars and trucks.

And we just hosed them with every kind of antipersonnel weapon you can imagine.

By doing this, we smoked them out and reduced the size of their forces. We also got lots of intelligence.

What Trump is doing against Kim Jong Un is a person-to-person Thunder Run, between heads of state.

Pretty clear he knows that if anyone fires a shot, he’ll be dead in minutes. He doesn’t know how to back off though.

I listened to Trump’s UN speech today. Sounded quite reasonable, to wit “back off the nukes, or very bad things will happen to you - and I’m looking at some of ya others as well; take the hint already.”

Interesting how Twitter responded to Trump’s posting of the speech, many tweets declaring him crazy and Un as giving a sensible response.
