5’6”, according to Wikipedia, which is tall from my perspective ;-). She’s 86 now. A great talent who had a very solid career for decades. Mother was a ballerina, father was a musician, so a stage career was a pretty obvious outcome.

Well, this gets personal. I had been watching Jimmy Fallon, since he is very smart and funny, but the other night ( what’s today ? ) maybe Tuesday, he came on with some kind of Trump thimg, and, having been drinking, I exploded, in front of my wife, to boot, that I was never ******* going to watch ******* Jimmy Fallon again. It’s a funny thing, but I only remember my own words. So far I’ve been faithful to my declaration, but I make no further claim.

Fallon is such a hypocrite. I will say this, the last appearance of Trump before the election was not bad. I had hope Fallon would not burn his goodwill and bridges, but I he has.

Think about how Cyd Charisse (another beautiful star, but not the talent of Gaynor) towered over Astaire, Gene Kelly, and other leading men—something you didn’t notice unless dancing. They would put Charisse in flats and maneuvered choreography to downplay her height. These days, tall is beautiful. As in 6ft Melania.

Cyd Charisse was 5’7”, says Wikipedia. Leslie Caron, another dancer/actress of the time, was 5’1”. Audrey Hepburn, 5’7”.

The marketability of a woman dancer has to take into account the height of available partners. It’s different for a model, especially a “glamour” model, like Melania Knauss or Brooke Shields, because there’s no scale. They tend to be in the top 1% of height, if only because a taller frame makes it easier to be extremely thin.

We don’t either. I don’t know why we even have “local channels” on our DIRECTV.

Jay Leno vs Joan Rivers? I am thinking that Rivers was not given the job on the Tonight Show because of what Carson wanted, but what NBC execs ordered. She was too much of a loose cannon, whereas Leno was boring and stale.

Because the law requires it. When directv started they had network feeds from LA and NY. Customers clamored for their stations and refused to subscribe. Local channels complain that people were watching lA and NY and they ere losing local sponsors.

it took a decade to get the feds to let them offer local channels. That was about 15 years ago. So now programming and things change. The satellite systems are too expensive and they refused to go cafeteria style offerings so now they do some streaming but are still way too expensive.

DirecTV since 1998

I don’t. But I have seen snippets of Seth Meyers and I find him particularly obnoxious and boorish.

They settled in for the night by watching Jay, Conan, Dave, or Jimmy...and even before that the guy who started it all, Steve Allen, the consummate intellectual - author, musician, composer, comedian whose humor never aimed to hurt others - class guy - he started talking about the dumbing down of America fifty years ago - and now we have Handler, Colbert and the rest of the mental midget late night stars - the cultural atrophy is heartbreaking......

Steve Allen - This Could Be the Start of Something Big - top that, Colbert, you no-class a$$.....

I’ve never watched late night TV shows. Except for the old Saturday Night Live ones.

Thought it was Turner Broadcasting Network.

I think I meant TBS. ;)

I’m not sure but I would guess so.

We found out the title of what they used on Sarah Palin.

They really are a piece of work. Well, they’re liberals, so no surprise.

One of the ugliest personalities on TV is that vindictive, nasty idiot, Colbert.

Nice finish - "Nor should we adopt the pose struck by some Trump Train passengers, whose skins are as thin as our commander in chief's."

The myth Trump has a thin skin is so pedestrian. No political figure in my lifetime has taken the constant abuse (from all sides) as President Trump. Not even Reagan.

If President Trump were as thin skinned as claimed by these "pundits" he would have resigned long ago. "Pundits" are the most boring people on earth.

Charisse only 5’7”?! Maybe that was tall for back then. We have gotten taller as a people. And wider. Well, I always had the impression from the movies that Gaynor was a “pocket Venus”. But she was one of my movie favorites.

Balanchine changed all that about woman ballet dancers. They became bony giraffes because he did so much adagio and wanted the long line. Before, dancers were not only short but pleasingly round like Fonteyn. They could carry a little extra tissue because, being short, could still be lifted by the males. The men found themselves having to lift almost six feet of bone and muscle, and drug abuse and anorexua was the new norm.

Really prefer bouncy allegro dancers to the endless stretching...but I can only watch ballet on YouTube now to see the classical choreography. Modern dance companies are just crap.
