CARACAS - Venezuelas government this week urged citizens to see rabbits as more than cute pets as it defended a plan to breed and eat them even as the opposition says this would do nothing to end chronic food shortages.
The Rabbit Plan is an effort by the government of President Nicolas Maduro to boost food availability. Authorities have also taught citizens to plant food on roofs and balconies of their homes.
Maduros adversaries dismiss such ideas as nonsensical, insisting the real problem is a failed model of oil-financed socialism that was unable to survive after crude markets collapsed.
The countrys constant shortages, resulting from stringent price and currency controls, would probably leave the would-be rabbit industry struggling to find materials ranging from feed to metal and wire for breeding cages.
Maduro says the country is a victim of an economic war led by adversaries and fueled by recent sanctions imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Very bland farm raised. Wild rabbit (cottontaand hare (jackrabbit) are extremely tasty, have more protein and almost no fat. Cook some wild on the grill and watch dos and cats line up. They know.
Let them eat rabbits??
Has anyone thought to put a bullet into Maduro?
Or several...
5.56mm
And rabbits are tasty!
That means that rabbit population in a 'hutch' would be self-sustaining after about 7 1/2 months.
When you and your family are starving, I doubt that you ( or your neighbors) would wait 7 1/2 months for a meal with meat.
Also, see an earlier post about 'rabbit starvation', whereby rabbit is too lean to be your sole source of meat (need fats and oils) alone.
I predict a run on French cookbooks in Spanish translation.
That is such a good idea. It can supply the carbs and fat that you are missing in the rabbit meat.
Ooh, a buffet...
Pretty good. Just when you think you have heard everything!
Absolutely. I cover that in my book "When There is No FEMA". Rabbit can be a good part of a survival diet, but it needs to be complimented by other foods.
If it grows in Venezuela they would probably be better served by growing sweet potatoes. That would certainly help to compliment the rabbit meat. Hopefully they have plenty of citrus.
didn’t Detroit try to do this too?
No Detroit didn't try to breed rabbits for food
They tried to breed like rabbits,
and the lead in the water affected their kits.
Socialism shares in mutual misery.
In Michael Moore’s documentary Roger and Me, the local government evidently gave grants for rabbit raising. Only remember because we raised rabbits for food without being paid to do it.
Agreed.
Eating a lot of rabbit meat can make you ill or kill you.

OH, and I lived in Tennessee for 3.5 years~great country!!
Most of the modern survival books come across as copy-and-paste jobs. “When There is No FEMA” is 500 pages of all original content - 3 years in the making, and created to be a textbook-quality reference.
Thank you for the information. I am looking forward to getting a copy :)
