The entire Florida Peninsula has begun to experience Hurricane Irma following landfall at Marco Island. Thousands of Floridians who evacuated the Atlantic cost to Gulf Coast areas found their safe shelter under direct threat from Hurricane Irma as the forecast shifted W Friday night and Saturday. Prayers for all in the storm path.

Are you there?I have a loved one there and they just lost cell service.
I am only trying to explain this to you so maybe others might take heed and maybe spend a 100 bucks or so in the future, so they too can have the most reliable means possible of hearing the outside world, if disaster visits them in the future.

Downtown Tampa still has power (YEEEAAA!!!) - though we have had a few “flickers”. Windy and rainy since this afternoon. Talked to family in Plant City about an hour ago and they do not have power. It went out around 5:00 in the afternoon.
Bracing for stronger winds later tonight but building has windows rated to 150-170 mph. Flooding not a concern since we’re on the 19th. floor. Cable working fine as is WIFI. Thank the Lord, we will make it through this.

Most people with a smart phone wouldn’t know any number to call since it’s not programmed as “carl” or “dad” even if they could find a land line. Bet they don’t even know the number for information.
I think the key is citizen band. Everyone should have a CB app on their phone. :-)

If you have a indoor tv antenna, hook it it up. If you do not, then straighten out a metal paper clip, stick it in the hole on the antenna connection on the TV, the bend the part sticking out up until you make an L. Scan for channels per the TV manual.
Hopefully you will pick up a couple of local stations.

I heard this on Zello early this evening; but after announcing it, they didn’t mention it again.
Shortly after the announcement, they made a cryptic statement about experiencing troublemakers on the channel giving false reports. I didn’t know whether they were referring to this specifically; at the time they announced it, they seemed to have trust in the person reporting it, but had trouble getting her entire story as she kept breaking up.

It is a great hobby, and can be extremely useful in emergency situations.
It is very inexpensive to get into as well. Just find a local Ham Club and you will discover, to your delight, that the members will come up with old equipment they will loan you to start out with or even more likely they will give freely to you.
It is no longer required of Hams that they be proficient in Morse code...but I recommend it be learned as it is a lot of fun and the best mode to use under bad band conditions.
It is unbelievable but there is actually a Morse code transceiver kit that you can buy on Ebay for 2.49 and that includes shipping! (They actually work!)
