After Siding With Dems, Trump Responds to GOP Criticism With a Reminder
Townhall.com ^ | September 8, 2017 | Courtney O'Brian

Republicans on Capitol Hill are surprised and "confounded" that the leader of their party, President Trump, sided with top Democrats in the debt ceiling debate this week, hiking it for three months.

He even earned a bit of rare praise from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Then, Trump twisted the knife even further by taking the advice of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi in regards to DACA. At her urging, the president tweeted out a rather compassionate message for illegal immigrants who currently benefit from the program. They don't have to worry during the six-month delay, Trump told them.

What gives, the GOP wondered.

Trump, hearing the criticism, immediately pounced on the opportunity to send this reminder.

Republicans, sorry, but I've been hearing about Repeal & Replace for 7 years, didn't happen! Even worse, the Senate Filibuster Rule will....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

...never allow the Republicans to pass even great legislation. 8 Dems control - will rarely get 60 (vs. 51) votes. It is a Repub Death Wish!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 8, 2017

In other words (those that can't fit in a tweet), if Republicans failed so miserably in regards to health care - something they've been screaming about for seven years - how can they be trusted to enact meaningful tax reform and rein in our debt?

A few Republican leaders, who although admit they were taken aback by Trump's reaching out to Democrats, acknowledged that this is an OK short term solution. House Speaker Paul Ryan told the press Thursday that while not ideal, it is "perfectly reasonable and rational."

On Twitter, the president urged Republicans "to start the Tax Reform/Tax Cut legislation ASAP."

"Hurry!"

Trump is in between a rock and a hard place. The republicans refuse to work with him and they are who should be working with him. The dems are actively working against him but will work with him if he gives them what they want.

I blame the republican leadership for not giving Trump a choice. I hate to say it but if my (supposedly) people would not work with me; I would work with whomever will to get the job done.

It’s obvious as the day turns into night; Ryan and the Turtle need to be gone from their leadership positions and someone who will work with Trump be voted in. This is beyond ridiculous and it’s no way to run a railroad.

He sure isn’t going to get The Wall from Schumer and Pelosi. LOL.

Trump doesn’t work for either party, so he gets to make a mess of things. He’s set the pubbies up to be heroes...the real bet is wether or not they’re smart enuf to win the latinos (that’s racis!) Either way, Mr Trump is coming into his own in the political realm - this is mettle.

>>They get voted into these leadership provisions ... because the status quo is very motivated to maintain its status.<<

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

ACTUALLY, they get voted in by funneling the most CA$H to the marginal types to get them reelected. It’s a straight quid-pro-quo.

That’s the meaning of “leaders” in Congress: those who will prostitute themslves as funnels for the lobbyists and special interests.

Right you are-no amnesty-if they want to live and work here, they can apply for a green card, same as any legal immigrant does-and if they are 18 or over-then they are adults-there so their their parents, uncles, first cousins, etc can’t stay here-they have to go back to their own country. And of course don’t be heartless and split up families-for those dreamers under 18, send mommy and daddy home right along with the kid(s) they used to get a free ride here-they will get rid of a lot of mojados, and I’ll bet it reduces the welfare costs by a substantial sum...

“I prefer that Trump would ground all business to a halt if his agenda items aren’t passed, and blame Congress for not passing a stand-alone Harvey bill...I would NEVER work with cretins like Schumer and Pelosi.”

Except one problem with that. If Trump grounded business, Ryan/McConnell would simply get with Pelosi/Schumer and pin it all on Trump...maybe to the point of teaming up with legislation to override Trump’s vetoes - in other words, a coup, in all but name.

Trump closed off that option to Ryan/McConnell.

“If I read and understood his comments right, what he actually said was that they had nothing to fear during the six months...I don’t see a problem with that.”

Agree, restatement of his DACA policy in a way that’s clear to the Dreamers...which was to wait 6 months before doing anything - and rounding up otherwise law-abiding Dreamers has always been off the table for Trump.

One thing I don’t like about Twitter. Doesn’t let you finish anything but a sound bite.

Given the attention span of many in this country, short statements stick longer than well thought out articles spanning several pages, like those posted on this forum. IN the latter case, it is many preaching to the choir. Trump is reaching individuals conservative forums and news media rarely do.

Congressional Democrats will never agree to support Trump’s agenda.

That's a lovely strawman you've got there. Carry him out much?

By this ploy Trump is forcing GOP RINOS in the House & the Senate to defend opposing him.

“I would NEVER work with cretins like Schumer and Pelosi.”

That’s ok, you will never be president, either. You won’t be in the position to have to make these types of decisions and maneuvers.

“I honestly think that the only true legislative priority Trump has is The Wall. He needs something that looks like a wall built within the next 18 months. How he gets that is really the tough part.”

The wall should have been a JOKE for the Republican Leadership. They should have reasoned “Give Trump his Stupid Wall, but we’ll run the rest of the show.” The wall costs next to nothing, by government standards, and there are likely enough judges to keep it from ever getting built, and beyond that, just whittle it away in Appropriation...so it’s a 3 foot pony wall when completed.

But even that was TOO MUCH for the Republican Leadership. They had to DEFEAT TRUMP on the Wall - they had to show Trump just who is in charge and those in charge are not about to let Trump look good.

...and so Trump answered them. If the Republican leaders won’t give Trump something as trivial as even his wall, why even bother working with them at all...since the Democrats are no worse on that issue.

‘The President read the GOP establishment the riot act:

I can and will make deals with the Democrats if you don’t get your act together.

Your failure to repeal and replace Obamacare and pass tax cuts won’t be on me.

If you make me successful, you will be successful. But if you keep thwarting my agenda, I have options.’

Exactly. The Uniparty hasn’t yet figured out that there’s a third option. They are still living in the mindset in which they force candidates like McCain, Romney and Jeb on us, and then say, ‘What are you going to do? Vote Democrat?’

Trump won, but the Uniparty thought they’d go back to being in control by undermining him relentlessly. He just pulled the rug out from under their smug act.

They haven’t seen anything yet. Wait till he targets one or two of the worst offenders for electoral defeat. Then they will start to listen.

Did Pelosi make a deal with the devil? It’ll be harder for Dems to keep making the “Trump is the devil” argument now. This could give a little cover to Dems in Trump heavy states to help him pass his agenda. Here’s Hoping!

I’m not sure Trump honestly wants O-care repealed. If congress passes a replacement, he will own “Trumpcare” forever.

I think he does, but I’m not convinced his idea of repeal is my idea of it.

We’ll simply have to see how it goes.
