Macron Gives In To Pressure From Trump On Defense Spending

France will increase its defense budget by nearly $2 billion next year, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe announced Thursday.

The increase of 1.6 billion euros ($1.93 billion) will continue over the next few years and President Emmanuel Macron has set a goal to meet NATO’s target to spend 2 percent of gross domestic product by 2025.

“This will be continued in 2019 and 2020 because the world we are living in is dangerous,” Philippe told broadcaster BFM.

The increase comes less than two months after Pierre de Villiers, the head of France’s armed forces, resigned in protest of an 850 million euro ($969 million) budget cut. De Villiers and Macron had an open dispute for weeks, which culminated in de Villiers’ resignation in July.

Several countries have stepped up their defense spending since U.S. President Donald Trump took office and started pressuring allies. NATO estimates Canada and European members will increase defense spending by 4.3 percent in 2017.

An increase of $2bil per year for 8 years (if they keep it up) to get to 2%.

And Germany would have to do even MORE to get to 2%.

I challenge anyone to make a cogent argument as to why the US should not abrogate the NATO treaty.

Winning...another case of PDJT being mocked where he is later proven correct.

I’m not sure it’s a good thing France revitalize its military. It will be in muslim hands in 20 years or less.

As we have learned in Afghanistan, muslim cultures cannot maintain the equipment we give them.

They are pirates, thieves, and destroyers...not builders or maintainers.

That’s why they have historically enslaved smarter people and made them do the things they can’t figure out—like building big mosques, or baths or whatever. I can see French people doing the bidding of Muslim idiots so they don’t get beheaded or get to keep living in a nice house or whatever. They will run out of educated people eventually, and then they will raid Poland for them.

You are correct about their use of smarter peoples. That has been the recent history of Saudi Arabia and surrounding oil rich neighbors.

Shameful.

We'll have to see if the French or other Europeans will be willing slaves and if they become slaves can maintain their intellectual edge (to the extent they still have one).

I am not sure a willingly broken and surrendered people could be of much value in the intellect department.

No motivation.
