Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

IIRC, that opinion was not universal. It's just that local government refused to give contrarians any credence.
It’s a real bad idea to play a CFB game tomorrow in Orlando. The experts have no idea where this cane is going to land. Some of the latest tracks have it potentially going straight up the state through Orlando.
My cell phone service is already getting janky here in the Jacksonville area. A lot of my neighbors have already left. The only thing people should be thinking about now is leaving or getting ready to shelter in place.

FWIW, that’s my take, too. If this evacation from Southern Florida goes well, is successful, then the “too big” excuse is toast.

The current predicted path at https://www.windy.com/?2017-09-11-09,28.442,-80.717,8 looks like it will be going right up the middle of the state just like your image shows. If it pans out like this, my family is right in the path. :(
just saw a Sea surface temp map..we are at the peak for water temps for the season..the Area around where Irma is headed has some of the warmest waters in the Atlantic Basin anyway..and they are about 2 degrees F above normal
if the upper level pattern remains the same ...going to be big trouble

All of the above is happening right now...if you wanted leave you should of done it Monday or Tuesday. Lots of places are closing now. We were in Wendys out 2 hours ago and they locked the door while we ate. Only the drive through open. My hubby has been in the hospital and I did all my shopping now have him home. Just couldn’t put him in a car to travel to Atlanta...
