Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Re Zello — do you know if it uses data from you plan, or is it similar to regular talk/text features?

Heard from a friend that mandatory evacuation of Hutchinson Island (barrier island in Martin Co and St. Lucie Co) has been rescinded due to the predicted path moving further and further west.

Can anyone confirm?

Gov. Scott on FNC stating that they need more nurses for special needs folks at shelters, asking for additional volunteer nurses...

“Still do not understand why they did not make all lanes northbound.”

Yesterday, someone (maybe Gov. Scott) said they need the southbound lanes open going south to let in the rescue people, nurses, electrical crews from other states, etc.

Yesterday I heard that Indiana and Florida have some kind of reciprocity agreement to assist each other. Apparently, Indiana was invaluable after other disasters in Florida, and they have a good working relationship.

It was also the fuel issue. Contraflow was delayed so they could keep getting gasoline to areas that needed it.

Yes; fuel, too. Someone had mentioned that fuel trucks were using southbound lanes to provide gas to cars that had run out going north. I don’t if that’s true or not, but it does make sense.

There are factors here well beyond wind speed. Katrina was 'only' a Cat 3 but had so much surge that it caused more damage in Mississippi than Camille. Likewise with Ike - it wasn't technically a major hurricane at landfall but it was the third most damaging hurricane prior to Harvey and Irma this year. Sandy wasn't even technically a hurricane at landfall. Also, the overall size of the storm matters a lot also. Camille and Labor Day were fairly compact, intense storms. Katrina and Ike and Sandy were large, so is Irma. And finally, there are far more people (and real estate) in the Gulf than there were for Camille and Labor Day. You cannot view storms through the single keyhole of wind speed.

Are the TV mets hyping this? Of course. Does that mean the underlying danger is not real? Of course not.

Can’t seem to get it to work for me, even with ad blocker turned off. Is it subscription only?

1935 went from a Cat 1 to a Cat 5 in about 24 hours in the same waters where Irma is now.
