Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Understood.
So what happens if it is 45 miles west of Orlando?

Looks like it got stuck on coastline over the coastal Key islands for now. We shall see when the main turn occurs, but for now it is a little late and on the far south tracking. So probably tracks off West Coast of Florida.

Can you even begin to comprehend the immensity of what is probably going to transpire over the next 72 hours? The first Cat 5 landfall in the US since Andrew. But instead of cutting East to West across the very southern part of Florida with a fairly compact hurricane, we are looking at a much wider hurricane moving South to North across the entire Florida peninsula. It doesn’t matter if the track is up the gut or a bit to the east or west. It is still a catastrophic event if it goes down anywhere remotely close to the forecast. So please, take your ignorant crapola bleatings elsewhere.

Oh, agreed, but how much and from how far away?

What I think we are seeing tonight is a “wobble”, south, and then back north, and the real effect of the trough (a strong turn that is maintained) is still some hours away. But, that’s just my guess. I believe there are some upper level westerly’s in the equation, too.

If Irma determinedly begins to curve north now, oh, golly...

Keep reading. Discussion progressed further. Hugging Cuban coastline. Over Cuban Keys. Basically between a rock and hard place. Looks like turn north is tracking off west coast of Fl for now. But we are talking a Cat 5. A Katrina type of storm.

first off...Andrew was never a Cat 5 storm....they dreamt that up 12 years after the fact...this is Hurricane Charley, thats all...dont fall for the media hysteria. West Palm is almost out of the cone now...it was ground zero 2 days ago...

The fact that the storm has slowed down means the steering currents from the Atlantic high that have driven it westward so far have weakened. So now it is close to sitting in place waiting for the next weather system to pick it up, namely shortwave troughs coming in from the Northwest. All the models see that, it now is just a matter of where and when.

Did you see that 895mb right as it hits the main land.
We don’t need this storm right now. And I have relatives just NW of Tampa. They have a doublewide, and could not afford this kind of insurance. At least they are not going to ride it out there.

Please, get lost. Tell the folks that died in Andrew and the thousands that lost their homes that it was as trivial as you say. Tell those who lost their homes to Charlie that he was trivial. I loathe morons like you that infest our hurricane threads and downcast life-threatening events. Get lost.

one more thing...Andrew was a very small compact storm...Irma is an average sized hurricane..not a HUGE MONSTER that cnn keeps saying..

No reports from Cuba ? Well it is raking their north coastline right now. So it will be a few hours at best until we hear from them. But what a difference in coverage.

You have to study hurricane history. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, the most intense landfall in U.S. history, had a hurricane go from Cat 1 to Cat 5 in a shorter distance, in the same area and around the same time of the month, as we are now looking at Irma crossing. And she is already a Cat 5 before she crosses that bathwater. And is on the most potentially destructive possible course in the United States for hurricane damage.
