Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

My son in law is the expert on trees and hopefully will be able to find the appropriate “safest place”. Thanks so much for your comments!

Gov. Rick Scott "All Floridians need to be prepared to evacuate."

Lake Okeechobee--High confidence the dike system will remain intact. Concern for water topping over dike. Lake level was lowered.

Fuel availability: EPA and VP Pence have waived fuel regulations and LEO are escorting fuel trucks to station destinations. Multiple tankers arrived into Tampa Bay and Port Everglades carrying millions of gallons of fuel. Gov. Scott is asking gas stations to remain open as long as possible. LEO will escort gas station employees out when the finally close for the storm.

Volunteers: To date, 17,000 people have signed up to volunteer. Need more volunteers.

No kidding. I was near Tampa 3 weeks ago and almost run off the highway twice, then nearly T-bone when my crazy-driver Florida friend made a left in front of a truck! Once upon a time my parents wintered off the “highway of death”, locally know as highway 19, in Holiday. You couldn’t give a place there. Talk about taking you life in your hands.

The jet charter people called this morning... we were to fly out of Boca Raton executive airport, but they ran out of jet fuel. They snagged a different jet that's in Ft. Lauderale, but they don't have enough fuel either to get it to Atlanta, so now we're set to leave from Palm Beach.

Keeping fingers crossed that we really do manage to get the heck out of here... might not.

It’s likely not going to be an issue but if it turns out to be, you’ll want to know.

Don’t do it. I know about what the Bible says about entertaining, and angels unaware, but this might be stretching it a bit.

Last flight out of FLL is tonight (Friday) at 1945 hrs.

I was wondering why Amtrak hasn’t hopped on the bandwagon. They run up the east coast to DC and could be making money hand over fist. I’d take that over sitting on 95/FL Tpk/75 for 12 hrs anyday.

“I read somewhere that Muriel Hemingway ordered all staff to evacuate. Cats not mentioned.”

I saw her video. She did mention the cats. She told the 72-year-old caretaker to leave, and to get the cats out. I think they’re on the feral side, so that might be a problem. :(

Great work on your graphics, very helpful, but want to clarify. Only the core winds diminish in speed and coverage, by the models? Is this simplified, or do the outer bands retain strength? If so, is this standard behavior after landfall, or is it due to the peninsula’s width? (Outer bands remain over water.)

My niece mentioned seeing the National Guard, power company trucks/cranes, and disaster relief teams headed south. She was headed north on Route 19. Said the trip is typically 5 hours and it took them 11.

I just met a friend for lunch at our favorite restaurant just west of Knoxville, which shares a parking lot with a couple hotels. It’s at an I-75 exit. There were several cars with FL license plates.

[I encounter a Father/Daughter who are homeless and living in a Tent area in Orlando.]

There are homeless shelters and agencies to provide shelter and food for the Father/Daughter. Most agencies urge people not to give them cash, because more than likely it will feed their habits not their appetites.

They do not seek help from those places because they are not drug free.

FPL Expects 4.1 Million Customers/ 9 million people To Suffer Power Outages

http://miami.cbslocal.com/2017/09/08/fpl-power-outages-irma/amp/

“We currently have an army of 13,500 restoration workers, both FPL crews and outside crews ready to respond as soon as it’s safe to do so. Many of the linemen are coming from across the country including from as far away as California. We have prepositioned equipment and people getting ready to fight the aftermath of Irma.”

“Unfortunately, there will be a period of time where we will have to hunker down and wait. We have to wait until the winds subside to 40mph to get on the road, 35mph to get buckets in the air.”

They sound as ready as one can be expected to be. In some ways, better for this to hit now than in the 1970’s. Of course in the 70’s there were more ants and fewer grasshoppers.

Is your destination still Atlanta?

You might aim for Knoxville where hotels might be more plentiful. I’m not positive, but just a thought.

I needed to use a generator for a few days a while back due to an ice storm.

Fortunately, I have a detached garage I could keep it in while it was running.
