Hurricane Irma Live Thread Part II

Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.

Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.

Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. “If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, we’ll gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... “If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail — it’s a secure shelter.” Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

Another one.

Both these articles point out that those high rise building cranes will become missiles during a cat4/5 event. Yikes.

We live in Jacksonville, Fl about 8 miles from the ocean. During hurricane Matthew last year our power never went out.

Forecasts for our area are predicting slower winds than when Matthew passed by us.

A lot will depend on how close the eye of Irma is to our shoreline.

I would prepare to shelter in place - have water, non-perishable food, batteries, pet food, books and cards, etc. You might be facing a power outage that could run weeks, given the potential magnitude of the situation. Hint - get an LCD headlamp for everyone, a couple of LCD lanterns as well, if you don’t have that already. And extra batteries. LCDs run a long time off of one battery set.

Primary models are aligning to within 100 miles or so of that turning point and should continue to get closer to each other over time.

Then insurance companies should be the ones overseeing such a program. It’s insane to leave hundreds of RVs in a lot to be destroyed while people are fleeing and could really use them. They could offer them to qualified people who agree to put down a deposit for non-storm related damage and to ensure return after the hurricane. The use of the RV might cost a little bit on the resale value. That would be a lot less than the loss of the entire RV.

I'm not a hardcore prepper; but I do maintain an emergency water supply stored in the crawl space. I use some 5-gallon Military Water Cans (about $25 each) supplemented with re-used 1-gallon distilled water bottles.

Here is a useful reference on how to do this safely:

Yeah but what weather situation or combination makes them think that Irma will do that?

“High impact,” is not good.

Bug out will be determined Friday night.

During Alicia, thousands of windowpanes in downtown Houston were broken by roofing gravel getting picked up and blown around.

Not happy.

I have contractors that are supposed to be flying in from Atalanta on Monday.

They told me “You will see us when you see us”.

I do blizzards - I don’t do hurricanes.

But if I lived in Miami, I’d think about heading out.

Wow. As bad as Irma is, the double whammy would be catastrophic.

Thank you, dirtboy! We’re new to this. My family is Cuban, most lived in Florida, but my husband and I were raised in Jersey/New York. Trying to reassure our son and daughter-in-law who live je e, too. Appreciate your help!
