Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/04/2017 2:02:19 PM PDT by NautiNurse

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

It doesn’t seem there’s much in her way. Except warm water.

The heat content in Irma's path is similar to what Harvey passed over on the way to becoming a Cat 4. Irma is already at that point.

Tomorrow is my big prep day. Thankfully I already scheduled the long weekend off. Multiple heavy straps to purchase from Lowe’s. Five gallon buckets with lids for documents. Harbor freight had a sale this weekend on a 2000 watt inverter generator, and I grabbed one (for the boat really, but perfect timing.
On the list...
Ice bags to pack the freezer chest and house. Dry ice on Friday if available. Saved newspaper to pack fridge for better insulation. Flood all fish boxes on the boat to weigh out down on the trailer. If the storm looks like direct hit here (.25 mile from the beach) I’ll deflate the boat trailer tires. One vehicle deep into carport and the truck will be parked based upon wind direction. Already purchased food, even for the dog. Have five five gallon bottles of water. Will fill two 30 garbage cans that I bleached clean with water for flushing. Bought cleaner with bleach for post storm cleaning. This week all laundry will be clean. Wilma left us without power for 17 days. Weapons to be clean tomorrow with holsters, ammo, flashlights and batteries staged. Already have three 20lb propane tanks for cooking oh the grill. Lawn furniture inside. Shutters going down tomorrow. Cell phones and backup batteries to be charged.elderly neighbors to help. Coleman lanterns ready with oil. Family to help with shutters. Walkie talkies charged and ready to go.life vest staged for the dog. Friday begin disconnecting electronics from surge danger.

Should be ready by Friday night. It looks like Friday night it will be gusty on the Keys and South Florida. Most preparation should be completed by Thursday night.

...my thoughts

Good to read he is ready for the hurricane.

If I was living there, then I would probably planning a trip to leaving the State soon.

Great question. If you have a opinion different from someone else on a potential disaster thread, people get wee weed up pretty quick. Because their opinion must be the right one. Only God knows....

I’ll be torquing the Tapcons extra tight.

Been 25 years since Andrew.

All bets are off.

Tropical storm force winds with shut down the airport. This could be Friday evening for FLL, earlier for MIA and Key West.

Passageweather.com indicates winds sustained at 35mph Friday evening

This will be when I find out if these impact windows are all they're cracked up to be.

It has been pretty tame thus far. When the thread gets bumped up to breaking news, it draws all sorts of evil people who say nobody should live along the coast, or xxxx location deserves to be destroyed, etc. Frankly, I prefer these threads when they aren’t in breaking news.

In worse case they will pack up there cats and hit the road....they don’t depend on what others say...they go by the strength of the Hurrican and proximity to where they are....in 20 some years they’ve never had to leave their home....but they have a plan if they have to.

And ya can’t forget all the downcasters who say it’s all a plot between the TV folks and the NHC to boost ratings. I still remember all the nimrods saying Sandy wasn’t going to be a big deal. They kinda vanished when the NYC subway tunnels flooded.
