Hurricane Irma Live Thread
NHC/NOAA ^ | NHC/NOAA | NHC/NOAA

While thoughts and prayers are with our Texas FRiends and neighbors, we are at the peak of the Atlantic Tropical Storm season. Hurricane Irma continues its trek from Cape Verde across the pond and toward the Hebert Box (see below). People with interests in the Southeastern U.S. and Gulf of Mexico should be alert to the forecast path updates for this powerful storm. It is important to note that the average NHC track errors are about 175 and 225 statute miles at days 4 and 5, respectively.

Hurricane Irma originally had a small wind field. In the past 24 hours, however, the wind field has expanded with hurriance force winds up to 40 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds up to 140 miles from the storm center.

FL Governor Rick Scott reminds Floridians: Families should take time today to make sure you have a disaster plan and fully-stocked Disaster Supply Kit. Florida residents from West Palm Beach to Tampa Bay are heeding the alert. Store shelves are emptying of bottled water.

“I surely hope you mean Ft. Myers to Charlotte, NC. Charlotte Co. FL is next door (up I-75) to Ft. Myers/Lee County FL.”

Yes, sorry for the confusion. Ft. Myers to Charlotte, NC

Nice to hear from you Jane....so very glad your home was “good” on your return...whew!

Just spoke again with my brother in Northern Florida....he’s on top of this threat but believes if Irma goes over land it will slow it down sufficient enough not to evacuate where he is.....but they are prepared just in case...and have a plan.

They’ve been through these threats many times over the years...and he understands this is one bad hurricane...He’ll see where it is Friday as he knows what to look for...

It’s been a 5 for a few days. Most of my friends on the east coast of Fl ha e already boarded their homes and are in Georgia already. My friend on the west coast boarded up and went inland.

This has been front page social networking, news site, and MSM for days now.

You should have.

The most fun courses I took in college were my met courses.

Also the most grueling.

All that calculus.....

Just looked at Google maps. Pretty big bottleneck at the merge of the Fla Tpk and I-75.

Ugh...I HATE that stretch of I-75 from Ocala to I-4.

The stupid quotient on the road goes up immensely around there.

Hurricanes feed on warmth. It’s why they’re so worried about it going into the Gulf. It would surprise the heck out of me if it manages to hold together in these present temps-at least, in these parts...

They feed on warm WATER, not warm air.

That's why going into the Gulf was such a big deal. The water there is VERY warm, hurricane jet fuel basically.

Irma would strengthen in the Gulf.

Thanks, I was wondering if that was what it was, or just a very high squirrelly cloud.
So much for the eye always being peaceful inside the wall.

“They should probably abandon the entire island to it’s neighbor Antigua”

It’s their home! Will you abandon your home because of a 100yr. challenge? Give your property away to your neighbor as well???? What is wrong with your head?

"WTHIT?"

Looks almost like a detached tornado, to me... (But, that definitely is just a guess!)

I was referring to the change where it used to change to a 3 when it hit florida. NOw, that map stays a 4...what happened to the 3? I suppose the more it stays off shore and in the warm waters, the more momentum it retains. I hope it keeps going north!!

Yes I would....if I lost everything, as well as my community and all it’s buildings on a sliver of an Island prone to Hurrican damage...yes you bet I would.

We left Marco Island at 6:30 this morning and arrived in Tega Cay which is just south of Charlotte and it took us 13 hours but we wasted about an hour eating and peeing. We go up thru middle of Fl to I4 then 95. Worst part of drive was Columbia, sc with rain and rush hour.

This storm has broken historic record for remaining a Category 5 in the Atlantic. We can’t underestimate the power and danger of Hurricane Irma.

It looks like the Gulf side is going to be spared the brunt.

We are hopefully optimistic that we will once again be spared a full-on hurricane. We will get plenty of tropical storm effects but won't have to evacuate from downtown Tampa. Either way, it's in the Lord's hands.
