At least one sports television network president believes that national anthem protests last season were a factor in the decline of NFL ratings.
On Wednesday during its annual NFL Media Day in New York City, CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus said research his network did internally indicated that the protests played some kind of role in declining average viewers. He was emphatic, however, that it was merely a factor and not the cause. The average television viewership for the 2016 NFL season dropped roughly 8% last year from 2015.
We did research and it was relatively proprietary research, to be honest with you, McManus said. But I think if you look at some of the reasons why NFL viewership was down last year, that is a reason thats mentioned by a fair amount of viewers. It is something they dont find attractive or they find dont compelling in coverage of the football game. How big a factor it was? I dont really know. But it was one of the factors that I think perhaps led to the slight decrease in ratings last year.

Earlier in the week, Mike Mulvihill, the executive vice president of research, league operations and strategy for Fox Sports, emphatically told Sports Business Daily media reporter John Ourand that any NFL viewer backlash to Kaepernick was not a factor in the NFL declines ...

Between this and their NFLGBTQism, I am done with pro-football.
I was done with the NFL after Peyton Manning retired.
The league is overrun with America haters, violent felons, domestic abusers, and cheaters. They have nothing that I need to see.
There is a stronger case for boycotting the NFL now than there was last year.
Last year they could claim that they were surprised by this stuff and that they weren't prepared to deal with it. That excuse is now gone. They've decided to let this stuff continue.
I'm hoping for a much larger decline this year.
Once they started running around IN PINK, I knew it was over for the NFL. I mean we’re talking Football, a MAN’S SPORT. But no, they got these ‘men’ to run around in pink.
Conlin simply made it end quicker.
Ah, CBS finally found the frequency of Captain Obvious.
Me thinks they protest too much. Why was the data “proprietary?” He’s only giving us his take on the survey rather than releasing it. And, if something, anything, is driving down ratings, why not put a stop to it? Why continue to shoot themselves in the foot by covering politics instead of the game? Is it that they think the political statement is more important than the ratings? Those ratings directly translate into money...profit. But they continue to do things that are driving down profit and the “journalists” get to decide what they are going to cover? Really? As a stockholder I’d be throttling some necks. I can tell you from having worked at a newspaper, the editor tells the reporters what to write. Reporters don’t just come up with their own stories...not in my experience.
That smell when you pick your nose is your brain.
No Amereeken football this year for me.
Already passed on a few games.
You do know this hurts not only your sales but sales of beer, brats, dogs, burgers, fries etc.
These Kcuf ups are hurting the little guy as we walk away from the game and have no need for whatever stuff they were hawking....
Get your entertainers in line...
I guarantee you if I had to endure this crap before any Vegas performance I would leave and bad mouth them.
It is improbable nay impossible to believe that you guys are this stupid
Get rid of all politics, the stupid pink in October crap and just focus on football. Further stop treating every tap to the QB as roughing and let the defense actually touch the receivers without getting an illegal contact penalty.(which can be called on almost any pass play)
Protests, pink month, general left wing down your throatIsm, and a growing distaste to watch grown men in tights that contrbute nothing of real value to the world beyond running, jumping, and throwing, while making millions of dollars controlled by billionairs that bilk the taxpayer into building their stadiums while being priced out and never being able to actually attend a game themselves. Maybe that for a start
“hoping for a much larger decline this year.”
Me, too.
“An 8% decrease is not a ‘slight’ decrease in a business that had experienced many years of annual growth and had expected the same for 2015.”
To say the least. Other than JC Penny’s and Target, I can’t think of any business that would consider an 8% drop as ‘slight’, much less a business like the NFL. The think the going term for this in most businesses would be ‘disaster’.
At least at Penny’s and Target they made a CONSCIENCE DECISION to blow off their customer base for some political objectives. I’m not even sure the NFL has even figured that much out yet.
>>Can we work on that?
I’m sure that someone over at NFL HQ has a copy of Minitab and knows how to use it.
They know exactly how big. It must be YUGE or they would have said how small of a contributor it was.
I tried to watch a preseason game, but I couldn’t forget about the politics - I think the NFL is ruined forever
I watch football not some political commentary for gays, illegals, minorities. They want to talk about that fine, I will not watch.
And if you go to the games, that is a lot of bucks.
On a related point, how is Target doing these days?
Duh. There was a full 4 page article written by some head in the sand idiot from the ComPost on why viewership is down and Colon Kaypernick was not even considered a factor.
It appears, though, that the NFL has not.
Which is fine—I enjoy having my Sunday afternoons free.
Krafts stooge Roger Goodell has been ruining the NFL for 10 years.
And he is on the verge of getting a 7 years extension. He threatened Texas with sanctions if they pass the keep the dudes out of the girls bathrooms bill. A real POS.
