North Korea said on Wednesday it had conducted a test of an intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM) to counter U.S. and South Korean military drills and as a first step in military action in the Pacific to "contain" the U.S. territory of Guam.
The North's leader Kim Jong Un ordered the missile drill to be conducted for the first time from its capital, Pyongyang, and said it was necessary to undertake more exercises with the Pacific as the target, the North's KCNA news agency said.
"The current ballistic rocket launching drill like a real war is the first step of the military operation of the KPA in the Pacific and a meaningful prelude to containing Guam," KCNA quoted Kim as saying. The Korean People's Army or KPA is the North's military.
Earlier this month, North Korea threatened to fire four missiles into the sea near Guam, home to a major military presence, after U.S. President Donald Trump said the North would face "fire and fury" if it threatened the United States.
Tuesday's test was of the same Hwasong-12 missile Kim had threatened to use on Guam, but the test flight took it another direction, over northern Japan's Hokkaido and into the North Pacific Ocean.
Trump, who has vowed not to let North Korea develop nuclear missiles that can hit the mainland United States, said the world had received North Korea's latest message "loud and clear".
"Threatening and destabilising actions only increase the North Korean regime's isolation in the region and among all nations of the world. All options are on the table," Trump said in a statement on Tuesday.....

It’s not 100% guaranteed.
So the day after he obliterates the DPRK I can quote you?
If the average person on the street knew 10% of what I know about nuclear weapons (and I’m assuredly no physicist) they’d shudder every time they heard the word Korea.
Should we Not take the shot?
NK has crossed the firing line.
I agree with AMB. Nikki Haley: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!
I think that the Russians and Chinese want us nuked and taken down a notch. The threat is real. The Norks are not afraid. The Nork leadership would just cross into China for asylum unless we were able to kill them first. The left would lite a candle and oppose any war effort and undermine Trump all the way. The left and the GOPe would of blame Trump for the attack. In the aftermath, we would be subjected to endless “healing events” and moments of silence which would be worse than being nuked.
I still think we should militarily take out the Norks. We need to tell the leadership that we are coming in and they and their families will all be killed if they launch any artillery or missles. We need to disarm them and make an example out of them.
The citizens of Guam are Americans and Guam has a long history with America. Any attack by Kim Jong Fat should be treated as an attack on the United States. In other words extermination of North Korea as a proven existential threat.
“IF we do have the ability to knock out ICBMs, then why are we allowing any ballistic launch from NK?”
It’s because our $hit doesn’t work 100% of the time. Probably more like 40%, so we don’t want to show Kim we’re unable to get everything he is capable of shooting our way. If we don’t want a Nuke in our country, we had better take out the Nork’s capability completely, and do it soon.
Like Russia needed an excuse to back their NK comrades. In case you haven't been paying attention the last 10+ years, Russia and the ChiComs have been staging annual joint war games since 2005 in obvious preparation for war with us and our allies. So the threat has little if anything to do with recent events. The Russians were humiliated during the Reagan period and ever since have been planning their long slow comeback (Evil Empire 2). Also in their camp, of course, is NK. And also Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba, and some other hostile Latin America leftist regimes.
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Russia's push into Ukraine has put many on edge. But less known is that Russia is also strengthening its military links south of the Rio Grande and re-establishing itself as a power in the region.
Vladimir Putin has been strengthening military links here, and Russia is now the largest arms dealer to governments in Latin America, surpassing the United States.
Russia has even floated the possibility of building new military bases in Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, and putting its warships permanently in the Caribbean.
In the midst of the Ukraine crisis, Russia's top diplomat Sergei Lavrov recently visited Cuba, Peru, Chile, and Nicaragua, where he announced that Russia would also pour money into the new Central American canal project. ..."

Russia agreed to provide military training for three leftist regimes in Latin America and increase military visits and exercises following a visit last week to the region by Moscow's Defense Minister Sergei Shoygu, Pentagon officials said.
Shoygu met with defense and military leaders in Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua and signed several agreements on warship visits and military training during the visit, which ran from Feb. 11 to 14. It is not clear whether any new arms deals were completed during the visit.
Defense officials said the Russian leader is seeking bases in the region for strategic bomber flights that Shoygu recently promised would include flights over the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Kim Dun Soon’s high military aspirations are to “contain Guam”. LOL.
>>If the average person on the street knew 10% of what I know about nuclear weapons (and Im assuredly no physicist) theyd shudder every time they heard the word Korea.
For example what? I study nukes too and consider myself extremely educated on them - but also like you, not as physicist - so maybe we can provide some contextual information for the rest of the gang here.

Don’t kid yourself. The N. Korean military is not Saddam’s military and would not be a pushover.
From Wikipedia.
The Korean People’s Army operates a very large amount of equipment, including 4,100 tanks, 2,100 APCs, 8,500 field artillery pieces, 5,100 multiple rocket launchers,[41] 11,000 air defense guns and some 10,000 MANPADS and anti-tank guided missiles[55] in the Ground force; about 500 vessels in the Navy[41] and 730 combat aircraft in the Air Force,[41] of which 478 are fighters and 180 are bombers.[56] North Korea also has the largest special forces in the world, as well as the largest submarine fleet.[57] The equipment is a mixture of World War II vintage vehicles and small arms, widely proliferated Cold War technology, and more modern Soviet or locally produced weapons.
North Korea possesses a massive array of long range artillery hidden just north of the Korean Demilitarized Zone. It has been stated that a preemptive strike on Seoul using their massive array of artillery along the Demilitarized Zone would mean that “millions would die in a sea of fire.” However, in a recent study done by the Nautilus Institute, it might not be as devastating as told if North Korea were aiming for an strategic attack on Seoul it is estimated that they could kill 64,000 people in the first day of a potential conflict.[58]
Strange logic you've got going on there. If Russia selling to them is bad, how is us selling to them good?
Do you seriously not realize that they're referring to different Latin American countries. That we are selling to our ALLIES, not our enemies (Russia's allies).
