The rules of the tent city were strict, arbitrary and brutally enforced. There are no newspapers allowed; Arpaio hated newspapers. The only food allowed for those of us in the work furlough program was the food in the vending machines, which was grossly overpriced.
During the sweltering summer, the temperature could reach 115 or 120 degrees. I was in the tents when we hit 120. It was impossible to stay cool in the oppressive heat. Everyone would strip down to their underwear. There was no cold water, only water from vending machines; and eventually, the machines would run out. People would faint; some had heatstroke. That summer, ambulances came about three times. One man died in his bed.
But the winter was even worse. During the winter, there were no heaters. Most jackets and heavily insulated pants werent allowed; they dont want you to be comfortable.
When the temperatures dropped, we were forced to come up with makeshift ways to keep ourselves warm. The showers were kept scalding hot during both summer and winter. We hated to shower, but we would fill our empty water bottles up with the nearly boiling water and put the bottles between our blankets when it was freezing outside. We also would save the plastic bags we found when we cleaned up the jail yard and wrap our feet with them, tucking hot water bottles inside to keep our feet warm while we slept.
Still, it was freezing, achingly cold. I was in so much pain that winter that now, when Im cold, it reminds me of being there.

An illegal who is still illegal, did time for drunk driving....because he wouldn’t do drug court
Life’s tough get a helmet
What isn’t mentioned is the paradise conditions during spring and fall.
Old shcool=the best school,God bless Arpaio.
Old shcool=the best school,God bless Arpaio.
Memories, memories. I was at FT Riley, Kansas in the summer of 1963 for ROTC summer camp. No AC there either and just as hot.
OK, you’ve stumped me. What’s “swamp cooling?”
Too bad cabron. “I was born in Mexico’’ translated: I came here illegally.
Hmm. Perhaps avoiding breaking the law would prevent this clown from dealing with jail conditions.
News flash, snowflake, Jail isn’t a hotel, it’s supposed to be unpleasant..
Evaporative cooling with water. A typical swamp cooler consists of a large aluminum or plastic box whose sides are fiber/based filters sort of the consistency of loofas. Water is dribbled through the fibrous filters and a large cylindrical spinning fan blasts air from the inside of the box through the wet pads. It’s an effective and inexpensive method of cooling. When the humidity is too high, it doesn’t cool as effectively. Air conditioning didn’t become affordable and widespread in Phoenix until the 1970’s. Up until then most residences, schools and businesses used evaporative/swamp cooling.
Keep in mind while reading that this is the Wapo. There are probably very few facts, if any.
“Hopefully this was written from somewhere in Mexico.”
More likely in an office at the Wapo.
No. And it is a minor crime, usually.
Think about the word "minor" and what it means. It only has meaning within the context in which it is used. A "minor" crime is still a crime. The word is only used to give comparison to those crimes that are "major", such as murder, rape and arson.
Drunk driving is a crime to the degree it poses an imminent danger to the safety of others. It has proven that it does. Once a drunk driver actually hurts someone, then it isn't just the drunk driving, but the actual harm he has caused that makes it more serious.
In other words, drunk driving is a minor crime until the day he runs into something or someone and causes property damage, personal injury or death, and then it changes from drunk driving into aggravated assault or manslaughter; more serious crimes.
So, I don't think this guy was minimizing to call his drunk driving conviction a minor crime. It doesn't change a thing for him though, in terms of his punishment. DUIs will get you jail time.
Total bulshit
I’ve seen folks wanting to be outside
Can’t do the time, DON’T DO THE CRIME! Shut the H up with the bellyaching, you earned what you got.
If Executions were more Texas style 5 yrs we’d have less crime too. We have 1 on TN DR 20+ yrs ALL state and Fed appeals, 2 jury trials all up held. Crime 1990, victim 8 yr old girl, he brutally beat, raped, strangled, wrapped her unconscious body in a blanket threw her off a dock in Memphis to drown. Still waiting for Justice our RINO Lame Duck gov won’t sign death warrant.
We use threats by action as a crime when it can kill someone.
Think if someone shot a machine gun across a school yard at recess but didn’t hit a single child; all the bullets went straight through and hit in a field behind the school.
Is it a crime because no one, that time, was hurt?
Of COURSE it's a crime, but it's a less serious one than if he mowed down 100 kids. No?
True. So, calling DUI or shooting in a school yard a “pre-crime” isn’t accurate. It is still a crime as they place people in real danger, and they are actions and not thoughts.
Movies such as “Minority Report” are about thoughts of actions and not actions. DUI is an action. Shooting through a school yard is an action. Lesser crimes than if either resulted in actual harm.
