House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi appeared confused in an interview this week about what kind of speech is protected by the U.S. Constitution.
The Constitution does not say that a person can shout yell wolf in a crowded theater. If you are endangering people, then you dont have a constitutional right to do that, Pelosi said in an interview on Wednesday with San Francisco TV station KRON.
The Democrat seemingly meant to paraphrase an opinion written by Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. in the landmark free speech case, Schenck v. United States (1919).
The most stringent protection of free speech would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic, Holmes wrote in his opinion.
Pelosi offered up the mixed metaphor after being asked about a request she made with the National Park Service to deny a permit to Patriot Prayer, a right-wing group that has plans to hold a rally at San Franciscos Crissy Field this weekend.
The National Park Service initially withheld the permit until Patriot Prayers organizers agreed to certain conditions aimed at limiting the risk of violence at the event.
My hope is the park service would not allow these elements to use a national park to spew forth their venom, Pelosi said in the interview.

Guess he should have worn his backpack on the front.
And a tad lower.....
I’ve called him things a lot worse than chimp.
And you can’t roller skate in a parakeet cage.......

There’s an old saying, you can lead Nancy Pelosi to critical facts and statistics, but you can’t make her think.
My hope is the park service would not allow these elements to use a national park to spew forth their venom,
My hope is the US House would not allow Nancy the floor to spew forth her venom, but alas she does so anyway.
Yes, all of you posters are really clever.
There is no law against yelling "wolf" or hollering "fire" in a crowed theater. In fact there may be laws against not hollering "fire" when there is a fire.
This is the correct way to summarize the Federal Government's legislative powers over the citizen.
The citizen may do anything he wishes in the exercise of his rights as long as his actions harm neither the person nor property of another citizen.
Implied in the splendor of that statement is that the citizen must accept the consequences of his actions as there is recourse in law should the exercise of rights bring harm to another.
You are giving me an idea.
We need a well-heeled FR person to create a new museum.
“The Crazy Lefty Museum”
It could feature talking robots made to look like Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Kamala Harris.
Actually, we could probably fill the museum with just Crazy California Leftists, now that I think about it.
Put it just over the line in Nevada, add some slot machines, use the crazy lefties for the machines, three Pelosis you win a three dollar bill, three Kamala’s you win a bill with a middle finger in it that says “racist”, etc.
:-)
That’s not how it goes. You mean, “If someone cries “fire” in the forest and no liberal is there to hear it, does it make a noise?”
OK, but don’t dare forget Hank Johnson and the capsizing of Guam. He owns some real classics. Maybe we can put the quotes in a book with fill-in-the-blanks and call it “MAD (Stupid) Libs”.
But if you’re a wolf can you howl in a theatre?
What if Pelosi barks in a crowded theatre?
You can only yell kill cops in a crowded theater.
Young Frankenstein (1974):
Inga: Werewolf!
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Werewolf?
Igor: There.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: What?
Igor: There, wolf. There, castle.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: Why are you talking that way?
Igor: I thought you wanted to.
Dr. Frederick Frankenstein: No, I don’t want to.
Igor: [shrugs] Suit yourself. I’m easy.
CNN's Wolf Blitzer
Ha! I had forgotten about him. Okay, if that Wolf shows up, I’ll yell!
