That’s a good idea. If all these hawks in congress are pushing for war let them vote for a resolution authorizing military action - “war” by any other name.
To sum up the speech: Get ready for a prrnanent presence in Afghanistan and Iraq. Think Korea and Germany.
Obama sent troops in with their hands tied behind their backs... because he knew it would demoralize us. Trump's not doing that.
Also, Obama's global strategy was to give Muslims more power... his goal in Egypt, Libya, Syria (and eventually Europe/USA) was to get a radical Islamic caliphate up and running to counter our evil Western culture.
Trump's not doing that either.

Yes, the Constitution certainly empowers the President to defend the nation and its interests. You pointed out there are many examples where a DOW is not necessary or practical. Of course sometimes the best defense is sometimes is offense so where’s the boundary that a DOW is necessary.

Tripoli declared war on us. fleet was two ships one captured (Philadelphia) and we actually paid $60K for the prisoners release. took Tripoli from behind with 6 marines (according to Craig Symonds atlas.) I think we should just do similar — bomb their poppy fields each year. Send in the CIA brass to spend a year tour getting all the intel. Afghanistan is not one city with one little Yusef in charge. and we mostly stayed on our ships. only the back door Tripoli offensive was necessary and we did have arabs and Europeans in the crew.

Bombing will not lead to victory. Especially not in Afghanistan. Afghanistan has never able to be occupied, since ancient times. This surge will be just like the last one. Then our next president can order another surge, and so forth.
Wow. It was about damn time fifty years ago. We have been on the wrong side of that dispute since the Partition. It was a crowning error of American foreign policy that we could not tolerate Nehru's third way.

I am Trump base and this speech was smarter on Afghan policy than anything I have heard before. Finally the POTUS is listening to military leaders instead of political hacks. This Afghan policy is the only chance to succeed against Taliban and radical Islam in the medium to long term.
Kudos to POTUS Trump.
