Is Google Working with Liberal Groups Snuff Out Conservative Websites?
PJ Media ^ | August 19, 2017 | Paula Bolyard

Google revealed in a blog post that it is now using machine learning to document "hate crimes and events" in America. They've partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about "hate events" easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy.

In the announcement, Simon Rogers, data editor of Google News Labs, wrote:

Now, with ProPublica, we are launching a new machine learning tool to help journalists covering hate news leverage this data in their reporting. The Documenting Hate News Index — built by the Google News Lab, data visualization studio Pitch Interactive and ProPublica — takes a raw feed of Google News articles from the past six months and uses the Google Cloud Natural Language API to create a visual tool to help reporters find news happening across the country. It’s a constantly-updating snapshot of data from this year, one which is valuable as a starting point to reporting on this area of news.

The Documenting Hate project launched in response to the lack of national data on hate crimes. While the FBI is required... (snip)

...All of which underlines the value of the Documenting Hate Project, which is powered by a number of different news organisations and journalists who collect and verify reports of hate crimes and events. Documenting Hate is informed by both reports from members of the public and raw Google News data of stories from across the nation.

On the surface, this looks rather innocuous... (Snip) ...But a quick glance at the list of partners for this project should raise some red flags:

Folks, we are not far away from a time in which Google and other search engines make sure the world never knows we (and Free Republic) exist.

There will be no record left of our stances and others who think like us will feel alone and isolated, too.

If we get to that point, it won’t matter.

I don’t use Google for searches because their results are slanted hard left and I don’t get what I am looking for.

Interesting!

Where is the conservative research into machine learning?

How do we counter Google suppression (if that’s the result of their work)?

I suspect that machine learning could help election strategy and tactics. A lot of data exists for training.

I haven’t used google in years. However, the verb “to google” (meaning to search the Internet) has unfortunately become part of the American Vocabulary.

I use duck-duck-go, and always can find what I am looking for.

I use https://duckduckgo.com instead of google search. I ditched android phone (for Microsoft windows phone, a relatively better company). I use pale moon web browser. Use Linux mint for my desktop.

A competing search engine or a general reference location (like Drudge) will be needed.

If conservative sites cannot survive on ad revenue, there is an interesting alternative provided by the Brave browser (made by the former president of Mozilla who was run out of town because he sent in money to help prevent same sex marriage). His browser allows you to provide micro payments to websites for visits. You can also choose to accept ads which do not leave cookies and are not obnoxious, and this will help pay that site, too. Brave stops scripts and other advertising from automatically showing.

Have you compared the two in terms of search? Does not Duck use Google or other main engine for its results? Just wondering.

First, to Jim Rob: I am so happy I contribute to FR on a monthly basis. I feel proud being a part of this wonderful organization.

Now, to this article:

Hey Big Brother, you smiling yet? It appears your wildest dreams will be coming true soon. You have my promise I will fight you tooth and claw on this issue.

USA proud!

I honestly don’t know if DDG uses Google, but, since it advertises as an alternative to google, I have been using it with very good search results. I tried Bing for a while and was not as impressed.

Yes I have. Duck duck go performs satisfactorily, however you will certainly be making a compromise by ditching google. To me the compromise is with it.

I agree as Bing misses a lot and is not as comprehensive as Google in scientific images. I hate Google and its political ideology and only use it as a last recourse.

I can think of a number of corporate entities that need to be fractured just like Humpty Dumpty, and their politics are irrelevant. They are far too big and powerful and have too much monopolistic control. They need competition from others in their market to keep them honest and the only way to accomplish that is to break them up. Facebook and Google having influence over the whole world are not representative of productive economies of scale.

I happened to be using the Google Chrome browser the other day when I was googling something on FR. Nothing came up. I tried the same search on DuckDuckGo and then in Google on Safari — and it worked just fine.

By the way, we can just about guarantee that all constitution-defending, bible-believing, Christian conservative patriotic groups will be classified as “hate” groups. Eventually, someone with the resources will develop a competing service and or existing services will step forward to fill the void. I can also see conservative sites linking to each other.

They should snuff out data editors. This is supposed to be about machine learning.
