Google revealed in a blog post that it is now using machine learning to document "hate crimes and events" in America. They've partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about "hate events" easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy.
In the announcement, Simon Rogers, data editor of Google News Labs, wrote:
Now, with ProPublica, we are launching a new machine learning tool to help journalists covering hate news leverage this data in their reporting. The Documenting Hate News Index built by the Google News Lab, data visualization studio Pitch Interactive and ProPublica takes a raw feed of Google News articles from the past six months and uses the Google Cloud Natural Language API to create a visual tool to help reporters find news happening across the country. Its a constantly-updating snapshot of data from this year, one which is valuable as a starting point to reporting on this area of news.
The Documenting Hate project launched in response to the lack of national data on hate crimes. While the FBI is required... (snip)
...All of which underlines the value of the Documenting Hate Project, which is powered by a number of different news organisations and journalists who collect and verify reports of hate crimes and events. Documenting Hate is informed by both reports from members of the public and raw Google News data of stories from across the nation.
On the surface, this looks rather innocuous... (Snip) ...But a quick glance at the list of partners for this project should raise some red flags:

Regulate Google - bump for later....
Amen brother!
Quote was from Independence Day movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QoLywiaM6PA
As written....A quick glance at the list of partners for this Googles ‘Documenting Hate Crime Project’ should raise some ‘red flags as well as who is financing them:
The ProPublica-led coalition includes ... The Google News Lab, ...Univision News,... the New York Times, ... WNYC, ... BuzzFeed News,... First Draft, ... Meedan,... New America Media,... The Root,... Latino USA,... The Advocate,.... 100 Days in Appalachia... and Ushahidi.
This coalition is also working with civil-rights groups such as the Southern Poverty Law Center, and schools such as the University of Miami School of Communications.
Funded by a stable of uber-liberal donors, including:
‘George Soros’s Open Society Foundation ‘and ‘Herb and Marion Sandle’r, billionaire former mortgage bankers whose Golden West Financial Corp. allegedly targeted subprime borrowers with “pick-a-pay” mortgages that led to toxic assets that were blamed for the collapse of Wachovia.......
. The Southern Poverty Law Center, of course, is infamous for targeting legitimate conservatives groups, branding them as “hate groups” because they refuse to walk in lockstep with the progressive agenda...... And it goes with out saying that The New York Times and BuzzFeed News lean left.
Yes!.....Couldn’t be better said than by “The Boss” though...and for such a time as this..as some would say.
Duck Duck uses Google I understand?
Do they? I didn’t know.
Don’t feed the beasts - avoid Google, Facebook, Amazon, Starbucks as a matter of self preservation.
ProPublica is a far-left, pro-communist, pro-Islamist organization funded by George Soros. Its stated goal (now scrubbed from Google and its own website) is to “create a social-justice-based society based on secular values and the groundbreaking work of Richard Cloward and Francis Fox Piven.”
DDG is Bing. The bulk of their search results come from sending the query to Yahoo. But Bing is, and has been for some time, handling searches for Yahoo.
The only thing you get out of DDG is some degree of anonymity (which is a good thing).
Regarding your comment about Bing, Bing and Google have been neck and neck in search quality metrics for years now.
Yep...
And the PJ Article is quite long but was well worth the read. Really has a lot of information good to be aware of. These days i do about as much “checking” as I do actually reading articles....authors matter...there’s a heap of very young wannabe writers out there that do nothing more than carry the messages they’ve been indoctrinated with in University. The left certainly has a ‘stronghold’ on their minds...few can think for themselves.
Someone wrote of that here on FR awhile back that DUCK uses google. I’m going to check it out though...need to find something better than google....
Well I checked it out...now a using it so we’ll see...it certainly works fast! So I’ll try it a few days and see. I didn’t see that it uses Google.
Yes.
Boycott Google.
Switched to DuckDuckGo a while back - probably a lot cleaner as far as the links that show up.
Use Ixquick HTTP Search. DD&G has been or is part of the Google machine.
vivaldi seems to be just a variant of Chrome and therefore a Google creature.
They do not advertise any safety/security features, although there may be some; scrolling and maybe other aspects depend on a complied list of graphics chips (Chromium 60 code) to include some which are ‘blacklisted’. 1.11 version apparently does not work well on macs.
I think vivaldi is an offshoot of opera. I saw it discussed on another board where people were discussing Google alternatives. Please let me know if I’ve been misled. Thanks.
