In doing my genealogy, I discovered a Civil War General who was killed in one of the major battles. One day I hope to visit that battlefield as part of my history and American history.
BTW that General fought for the Union side, yet I hold no animosity towards any of the Confederacy information, statues or honors that might be present at that site.
It’s a beautifully maintained battlefield with a wonderful bookstore/gift shop attached. Hope you get there soon.
P.S.: I suspect if they have to, they’ll cave on the issue. I have no faith in our institutions anymore.
My sister lives close to Gettysburg and was a volunteer there for several years.
Years later vets from both sides met at the battle field and not one of them had anger towards the other. What they did have was respect , something which is lacking by the new American Taliban
None of my direct ancestors fought in the civil war; by the time it broke out they had migrated west or to Canada. But plenty of ancestral uncles and cousins did... on both sides. The monuments to history need to stay.
I’ve got ancestors from both sides of the CW.
Neither do I. My great-grandfather was a Union Infantry volunteer at Gettysburg and came through it unscathed. But I admire some of the Reb generals. My favorite Confed. General is not Lee, but Longstreet. There’s a statue of him at Gburg, placed around the time of the movie “GETTYSBURG”..
