Asked about players who did not stand for the national anthem before preseason games, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday that while the playing of the anthem is a special moment to him, we also have to understand the other side.
Goodell made the comments at University of Phoenix Stadium during a 45-minute question-and-answer period with Arizona Cardinals club seat holders. One season ticket-holder, Bruce Olson, asked the commissioner whether players were going to continue to protest during the anthem and if anything could be done about it.
Its one of those things where I think we have to understand that there are people that have different viewpoints, Goodell said. The national anthem is a special moment to me. Its a point of pride. But we also have to understand the other side, that people do have rights and we want to respect those.
Thats the answer thats getting all the coverage, but supposedly there was a follow-up question (which I still cant find a video for) where he modified his response, saying that while he respects the rights of the players to protest, theres a time and a place for it. It seemed to be an indication that on the field right before a game starts was not that time or place.
Perhaps hell prove me wrong, but at this point Im convinced that this is a beast that Roger Goodell simply doesnt want to wrestle with. Hell offer his take on it, but leave the individual teams hanging in terms of what they should do. And most of them will fear the backlash if they clamp down on the protests, so the sport will suffer further declines in viewership as fans grow increasingly annoyed over the politicization of the greatest sport on Earth.

Spoken like a true pansy.
Absolutely, chris37!
I boycotted the NFL last year, after 55 years of following the league(s) closely. It will be easier this year.
He answered like a weasel would have.
NFL lost me last year. I don’t care what they do.
I have toenails to clip.
Not watching any more NFL games. No chili cooking in preparation for the Sunday games....
I’ll still make chili, but not for game watching. I’ll read, go ride the cycle, and the little crazy woman always has her job jar.
I won’t miss the NFL. If they won’t support my country, I’ll not support them.
What would Bill Belichek do with a player that sat. You know he would not put up with it as the team is most important
We are going on a big vacation, starting Saturday, to view the eclipse. Going to the NFL Hall of Fame was going to be part of that vacation.
Not anymore.
My son and I love football. We love watching it together and had looked forward to going to this as part of our family vacation.
I plan on sending this message to the HoF and to Roger...if I can find an email. There comes a time when these jokers need to know who pays the bills. The number of games I watch is way down from a few years ago and will go WAY down even more now. I've dropped out of my fantasy football league (that my military unit does...and since I'm the superintendent...it was kinda fun for the guys to beat the boss)...and there is more to come.
Even people who DON'T watch the NFL should write and say they aren't watching anymore!
I want to know who they are, who to boo the loudest against, who to cheer the loudest for every mistake or bad play they make. If it's someone on my team, I'll know NOT to buy a ticket.
Rush Limbaugh said today that the NFL is through - he can’t say when or exactly how, but it’s done - he’s right.....
Yes, Goodell is killing it. The question is will owners like Jerry Jones continue to put up with Goodell? As they lose more fans and money, they’ll start itching to replace the steaming pile of PC bs that Goodell is.
Save this comment & see how the NFL is doing is say, 5 years.
They are well on their way to the dustbin of history, IMO.
I am a pretty strong sports fan-—even without anything but an antenna for my TV.
However, I won’t be watching NFL football this year if these overpaid & under brained jackasses continue to be disrespectful to the Nation Anthem.
IF you don’t like the song——take off the uniform & quit taking the money.
IF I have a company & you are required to wear a uniform—have a certain type of haircut—be clean & neat & Pass drug tests while you are on MY PAYROLL, then, by GOD, YOU WILL DO THIS OR YOU WILL BE FIRED.
These spoiled athletes are helping to tear America apart. Sounds like Zimbabwe-—and when they drove the WHITE farmers off the land, NONE of the blacks could produce a product. That country went from EXPORTING over 95% of what they grew-—after feeding their own population—to IMPORTING over 90% of their daily food. A complete reversal of fortune.
Understand this side, you politically correct b-tch: the NFL—as a corporate entity—is on the verge of becoming persona non grata in millions of households all across America—from sea to shining sea.
And the decline in fan support (and associated revenue) which began last year—as a direct result of Colin Kaepernick's shameful disrespect for the national anthem and those it honors—will quickly accelerate, thus costing the league tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue, with corresponding damage to its brand and prestige.
The NFL is an entertainment product which is becoming significantly less entertaining due to the increasingly un-American behavior of some of its ingrate players.
As a Floridian, I've been a Miami Dolphins fan since before their 17-0 perfect season (!), but I'm going to find something else to do with my Sunday afternoons if the NFL doesn't aggressively sanction players who disrespect the greatest and freest nation the world has ever seen—and the People of that nation who have made them multi-millionaires...
“these Pro sports guys are all terrified of the black athlete.”
As well they should be.
Accidental billionaires, all of the owners. Once the illusion is shattered, they are f***ed.
This dunce could have nipped this whole thing in the bud by pointing out that nobody has freedom of speech on the job. You can’t wear a “Meat is Murder” shirt if you are a hostess in a steak house, and you can’t shout, “I hate organic food.” if you are a cashier at Whole Foods. Goodell is a coward, and like the rest of corporate leaders and politicians, he is afraid of what blacks will do if you make them angry.

They will be removing seats in stadiums soon. Just like NASCAR.
I attended a major car show/race event in Kentucky, last weekend. Before the show, the announcer on the PA said “Please stand for our National Anthem, and if you don’t want to stand, please leave”
The crowd cheered wildly. Thanks Tim!
