DURHAM
The protester who climbed a ladder to help bring down a Confederate soldier statue was arrested Tuesday, and Sheriff Mike Andrews said his office will pursue felony charges against others.
Let me be clear, no one is getting away with what happened, Andrews said.
Takiyah Thompson, a member of Workers World Party and student at N.C. Central University, was arrested after activists held a press conference at NCCU Tuesday afternoon.
In a release Thompson said she was the one who tied a rope around the soldiers neck so that others could pull the statue to the ground.
The protest left The Confederate Soldiers Monument, dedicated on May 10, 1924, headless on the grass.
Thompson was charged with participation in a riot with property damage in excess of $1,500 (Class H Felony) and inciting others to riot where there is property damage in excess of $1,500 (Class F Felony), the Sheriffs Office said.
She also was charged with disorderly conduct by injury to a statue and damage to real property, both misdemeanors.

Wow, a double “their” screw up.
oops.
It’s nice to hope for a felony conviction, but “riot” is a stretch with cops standing by.
I’m saying this because I think the Durham County Sheriff is trying to look tough when he should have fought harder to keep the statue up. Also, I think the laws need to be toughened against these sorts of atrocities.
Pretending that Taqiyah’s fate will be a deterrent against future aggression is naive, I think. I don’t want to let the pressure up on the Sheriff, or on the Legislature.
That’s fine, but what’s their to defense she was emotionally charged? That’s not a defense. That’s just an excuse and does not make it okay to break the law in that instance.
Almost all crimes are emotionally charged.
She also needs to pay for the restoration of the statue and repairs to any damage done, as well as others who helped her. If she cannot pay, put a lien on her - that means no more student loans or other financing - until she pays up. That’s how the rest of the world works.
One would think....
City cops had no jurisdiction in the court house in their city? No one figured out in the last hundred & fifty years what to do when county cops are undermanned? All county cops left at once?
This must be the only court house in the state where Otis the Drunk gets to come in & lock himself up.
I'm sure they'll put a new statue there. Just don't be too surprised when it doesn't look anything like the one she knocked down.
LOL! That’s it’s a very weak defense and excuse. As if that is the first time anyone has ever tried that.... NOT!
The police said they were concerned with their safety, but recorded the event to get people later when it was easier to get them.
The police do not have a problem pulling someone over vs. a riot where you are dealing with a mob of charged up people. Two different situations. You are comparing apples to oranges.
Maybe you can drive down to the courthouse and tell that to the judge.... Haha!
Horse shit!
I hope she has to pay to have the statue restored.
She’s a thick girl. And dressed like a dude.
But it seems like daily now I run across at least one person that I can’t tell their gender.
Upon further investigation of city cops having no jurisdiction in their own court house: I get it! It’s a joke! Ha, ha, ha!
True, but the police don’t seem to have a problem increasing the odds by calling for help in other situations.
I think a couple hundred showed up at Ruby Ridge, and that was for three adults and two kids.
Well, there was a dog there too.
The courthouse was the COUNTY courthouse...The land it is on is county property...It is like an island in the middle of the city...
The county cops were out in the county, not in the city...
It is weird, but that’s how it works...
Too bad it wasn’t Jacksonville, FLA...The city limit is the county line....
Is the statue damaged beyond repair, or will they be putting it back up, does anybody know?
Hmmm, what does this remind me of? Oh yeah...

The felony count is weak because police were present and the video shows the crowd under control.
The misdemeanors don’t mean much ($100 fine).
But I think they’ll go for jury nullification just the same.
No...It’s fact...
“Why did law enforcement stand there and watch it happen?”
The Durham mayor (like the Virginia governor) prolly gave a `stand own’ order, as in Charlotteville.
The mayor and vice-mayor are white-gloved Democrat house boys and the cops know who butters their bread.
But it’s hard to sweep crimes like these under the rug when it’s national news. So show trials and wrists slapped.
Not surprised the lead culprit is a commie.
