Reporter: Police Were Called Off When Violence Started – They Said, "We’re Leaving"

FOX News reporter Doug McKelway attended the violent protests Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia.

McKelway told FOX News viewers the police pulled out of Lee Park after the violence started. The police told him, “We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous.”

Doug McKelway: We are now beginning to hear criticism bubble up on all sides of this event about the initial slow response by the police. When I got out of my car yesterday in Charlottesville about 10:30 in the morning you knew this was a bad scene and bad things were going to be happening because people were congregating at Lee Park and Emancipation Park wearing helmets, body armor, carrying big heavy sticks. Nobody was intent on peace here from either side. People were intent on causing havoc and causing damage. And even as wounded were being brought out of the park police were sitting idly by. I was standing off a cordoned off area where the police had set up as a staging area, the state police, and they said you can come in here this is a safe area. But when the tear gas started to fly, thrown by protesters, the police themselves began to evacuate then. I asked the guy who was in charge, “Where you going?” He said, “We’re leaving. It’s too dangerous.” They had a chance to nip this thing in the bud and they chose not to.

>>I’m not sure I blame the police for not wanting to wind up in the middle, job or no job.

FAIL.

“It was a strange time, 1975. A big shark terrorized the nation in a movie called Jaws; Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme and Sara Moore popped off a few shots at President Gerald Ford; Patty Hearst was finally nabbed in San Francisco after her kidnapping by machine-gun-toting terrorists; and the number-one song was “Love Will Keep Us Together.”

That year, Denver ranked as one of the nation’s three top cities for bombings. The Denver bomb squad was dispatched 339 times, picked up 73 explosive devices and handled 24 actual explosions.”

The last REAL protests were the Tea Party protests. What we’re seeing nowadays is simply idiocy by all sides.

Given the point where he started the run, how little attention was being paid to him and how nearly vacant the street was immediately behind him I can’t buy that he was under stress, at least not from the “crowd.”

Also, choosing to go forward over a block into a packed crowd instead of backing up on an empty street would be poor judgment on steroids.

Nope, I’m not buying self defense either.

Forgive me if I see the issues between the left and the so-called white supremacists this way:

One of those groups wants to murder me and my family because we love our country and the other doesn’t.

So while I may not harbor any sympathies for the people with the Confederate flags the undeniable fact is that they’re out fighting the people who say they want to wipe out all white people.

Don’t mind me then if I find myself somewhat grateful that at least someone is standing in the way of the real racists who want to commit genocide in our time.

And the other side has a history of violence against/wiping out black and Jewish people. You will forgive me if I find both sides equally loathsome.

Correction: Both sides at that protest share this in common.

That’s what happens when you sue cops for ‘racism’, etc. while doing animal control on the lower classes. Sooner or later they’re gonna up and leave ya to your own devices because the words “Treyvon Martin” keep echoing in their heads.

During WWII the two very real threats to our imminent survival put a very firm lid on all kinds of cultural nuttery that goes on today for lack of a serious external threat.

.....ok “Independent Mind”...........first, I appreciate your gentlemanly comments or if your a lady your lady like comments to my post.

I just listened (Monday night, 6pm) to Police Chief Al Thomas’s statement at a news conference. It appears to me that he is blaming everything on the Alt Right and NOTHING on the police department.

My comments that you responded to were based upon a source that is certainly not right wing. Namely it was a Fox News reporter and one of their big name guys. I think it was McElroy or something like that.

Anyway, he says that the Charlottesville PD retreated just as the all out fight began and the officer in charge told him “we’re outta here..........it’s too dangerous”.

So, with reports like this, we now have a Police Chief saying...........in effect..........”ohhhhh no.........we were in the middle of the fight all the time”. So, who’s lying is all I want to know.

If the Fox News guy is telling the truth, then the Charlottesville police (and the mayors and McAuliffe) are responsible for the injured and for the girl Heather’s death.

Many police departments put the statement “to protect and to serve” on their police cars. Where was Heather’s protection? Fox news says they were runnin and hidin.

FYI, in many years on FR, I have written MANY posts in support of police and usually try hard to give them the benefit of the doubt. But, if citizens were out trying to kill each other in street fights and the Charlottesville PD was hiding then they should all be fired immediately and bring in the National Guard until replacements can be hired.

I think the police’s hands were tied. Btw, there were also Virginia State Police and Virginia National a Guard on the scene.

None of them did much of anything. I think that is because of the instructions they received from the governor and the mayor.

I agree but, living in Austin or the Austin area plus six decades I know a little bit about police college town police forces and job one to them is “diversity” which translated means as few straight white males as possible.

The problems this causes came to the surface in Charlottesville. Example: You have a mad as hell 6’ 6”, 250 lb. white guy regardless of his beliefs and you send a 95lb woman out to fight him it’s not going to end well.

So, “The Left”, in the persons of McAuliffe and the mayors, NEED COVER to hide their hiring practices. No, I don’t have documented proof I can send you in an email but come down to Austin.............we’ll walk around UT and downtown.............you will see what I mean.

At the end of the day though, it is the electorate that puts these people in office that just don’t “get it”. Now, they will have to pay out millions and see their taxes raised.

Only a comparison here, but with the recent G-20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany...they brought 20,000 cops into the city for the three-day conference to keep the peace.

It’s obvious from day one...the planners have a marginalized safety plan for the general public. They’ve got enough to protect the VIP-crowd, but the city is going to be given an inadequate force for the problems ahead. Vehicle fires and assaults occur on day one.

By the end of this Summit, it’s noted that the cops on a couple occasions (while ordered to proceed)...kinda set back on several occasions and refused to enforce security upon the protest crowd. They generally didn’t think the leadership stood behind them.

I see the same errors in this Virginia episode. I don’t think the governor was prepared for this mess. I don’t think the cops really wanted to get into the middle of any violence. Once they said “we’re leaving”....you might as well assume that all heck will break out and there’s going to be massive violence.

It’s possible that if they did their jobs that woman might not have been killed.
Her family and those who were injured may have a case against the city, if not the state?

So, Did Police Just Stand Around As Charlottesville Descended Into Chaos?

https://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2017/08/14/so-did-police-just-stand-around-as-charlottesville-descended-into-chaos-n2368410

I know personally that in the 1970s after the 1968 riots, police were trained in what was called “RIOT CONTROL”.

In the 1980s and 1990s that training was re-classified to
“CROWD CONTROL” in order to give a more softer name to what was basically the same riot control police training.

In the 21st Century that training was modified to be gentler and kinder with that training now called:

“CROWD MANAGEMENT”

However, recently after ‘Ferguson’ and Michael Brown, police are receiving training in:

‘Standing around’, ‘watching’, (The three monkeys method of police operation today - ‘Hear no evil, See no evil, say no evil’ - with ‘Run and hide’ as the official ‘Retreat’ method ordered by directive per orders to their police chiefs from Democrat run city political leaders.
