The South American trading bloc Mercosur has condemned President Trump for saying he was considering military action in the Venezuela crisis. Argentina said dialogue and diplomacy were the only ways to promote democracy in Venezuela. Venezuela's foreign minister said Mr Trump's words had been hostile and disrespectful and risked destablising Latin America. Violent demonstrations since April have left more than 120 people dead. President Nicolas Maduro's new constituent assembly - which can rewrite the constitution and could override the opposition-controlled parliament - has been widely criticised as anti-democratic.
Mercosur - which includes the region's largest economies Argentina and Brazil as well as Paraguay and Uruguay - indefinitely suspended Venezuela's membership last week. Other Latin American countries also condemned Mr Trump's comments, including Mexico, Colombia and Peru, which said Mr Trump's threat was against UN principles. Peru has been a fierce critic of Mr Maduro's government. On Friday Peru expelled Venezuela's ambassador after Caracas sent an "unacceptable" response to regional condemnation of its new constituent assembly. Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has urged Mr Maduro to resign and called him a dictator.
On Friday evening Mr Trump told reporters the US had "many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary". "The people are suffering and they're dying," he added. The US recently imposed sanctions on President Maduro, branding him a dictator.
The White House later said that Mr Maduro had requested a phone call with the American president. In response, the White House said Mr Trump would gladly speak to his Venezuelan counterpart, when democracy had been restored in the country.

South America’s mess.
Let the bastards of Bolivar deal with another one of their fine messes.
Trump only helped Maduro by getting involved.
I agree. We should let socialist countries be socialist countries. It never ends well, and can serve as a warning to left-leaning weenies everywhere. Just don’t ask for aid. And don’t make threats against us either.
Set up some Contras with the provision they sell us oil cheap after they win.
Trump provided a distraction.
Latin America: 13% of the world’s population, 30% of the world’s homicides.
Article is another blatant lie: Trump is not considering a military response; he just said nothing was off the table down the road.
.........I would support a very limited, very targeted strike that had a 90% chance of achieving it’s goal without ANY American kids at risk and very low Venezuelan casualties.
So, when you stop laughing, this means similar to the attack Trump just made on Syria except rather than 59 Tomahawks make it 590.
Targets could/should be military, hopefully remote and Maduro himself and/or his military leadership similar to Reagan attacking Kadhafi.
Thousands of kids starving to death right this minute bothers me and politics be damned. Kill Maduro and as many pals as we can!
Dissent is a good sign
“Article is another blatant lie: Trump is not considering a military response; he just said nothing was off the table down the road.”
This ^^^^^^
Actually, South America is mostly stable & prosperous. And a good place to consider retiring to.
It’s not a place to start another war. This was a dumb thing to say.
Time to send in the A team or Expendables
Who cares? Go find something to eat.....and some toilet paper.
If we need to evacuate our Embassy or other Americans it will be a “ military response”
If they need to evacuate their embassies, don’t call us
At least two of us get it.
Count me in
No military option for Venezuela. Trump was elected to stop this madness.
If Maduro doubles and triples down on political repression, as he apparently is preparing to do, how does this not become a civil war? But of course, we are to blame, or rather Trump is if civil unrest becomes insurrection in Venezuela. Surely we can not the ruling totalitarian regime and it’s Cuban communist supporters, those actually engaging in suppression of human and political rights in that country.
Please watch as this unfolds, and note how quick leftists and the “blame America first Democrats” jump to their rehearsed conclusions.
The ‘veep’ in Venezuela is Hezbollah. Iranian, I think.
