John McCain, typically a supporter of a hawkish foreign policy, told KTAR radio Tuesday that President Trump's threat to rain "fire and fury" down on North Korea was a mistake:
"I take exception to the President's comments because you gotta be able to do what you say you're gonna do...In other words, the old walk softly but carry a big stick, Teddy Roosevelt's saying, which I think is something that should've applied because all it's going to do is bring us closer to a serious confrontation. I think this is very, very, very serious The great leaders I've seen don't threaten unless they're ready to act and I'm not sure President Trump is ready to act...It's the classic Trump in that he overstates things."
That position was shared by Former Defense Secretary William J. Perry, who tweeted "Nuclear deterrence is only effective if threats are deemed credible, bluster hurts our national security posture."

Who has the cojones to boot his butt out of the Pubbie Party? and obtw, Pansey Graham also.
If that’s what Trump had said, that would be fine. But his “fire and fury” counter-threat was IMO a clear mistake. Obama’s red line on steroids, if you will.
Wish they would zap this nit wit already
Could there be any more dangerous behavior than undercutting the president’s threat to a NUCLEAR adversary in public? McCain is deluded by the false praise of reporters and democrats.
Can I make a suggestion?
Trump meant it, and in case you haven’t noticed NK is directly threatening the USA with a nuclear attack.
McCainiac needs to assume room temp ASAP.
Perhaps he can sponsor a resolution that prevents Predident Trump from doing anything until North Korea nukes an American city. Then after the event, McCain can say “lets see Donald make America great again now”.
Nice to see InSain is circling the wagons with his Party.
Really, because of Kim’s threat in response now, Trump is going to light up the planet beyond what was done at Hiroshima?
If McCain were president he’d already have the bombers in the air. This is just about him being butt hurt Donald insulted him.
McCain was criticized for singing “Bomb, bomb Iran”... senility has set in.
Juan is irrelevant.
This guy can kiss the fatest part of my skinny, white, ass.
Juan please retire....you are worthless...
Well, at what point, in face of the increasingly violent threats being issued by North Korea, do these grey beards think A LEADER RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DEFENSE OF HIS NATION should actually threaten back? After a simulated attack on Guam, the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, or the West Coast? Or do they feel the weapons have to be employed before the leader of the United States should actually raise his voice and make it clear that this escalation of threatening the nation has but one tragic ending if it continues?
Pundits and experts are flying blind here. No one has previous experience in a similar situation before. The existing nuclear powers have never behaved in this manner towards one another because they all have an intimate understanding of the power of these weapons and the fact that, once the exchanges start, the hammer of destruction will inevitably fall heavily on both sides even in a limited exchange.
North Korean rhetoric thus far gives no indication that they understand a strike by them on the United States will have a nation ending downside for them. At some level they probably do, but their pronouncements mostly reveal an almost juvenile fascination with their shiny new toy.
The exercises they feel are so threatening have been going on since at least the 1970s. Of course, they include an offensive component. But that component is the logical last step after a successful defense against a North Korean attack.
The real threat to North Korea is the ever expanding chasm in capability between an economically and politically stunted North Korea and a South Korea that grows more economically prosperous, more technologically capable, stronger militarily and more populous with every passing day. While still dangerous conventionally, the days that North Korea’s 1 million+ Army had any possibility of defeating South Korea and their US ally’s forces are gone.
Right now, there are some Air Force and Navy planners in the Pentagon and at the executing joint commands doing something they never thought they would do during their careers; seriously reviewing and updating the existing plans for a massive nuclear strike on North Korea. And it is also reasonable to expect that, right now, there are missile, bomber, ship, and submarine crews reviewing the readiness of their nuclear weapon systems for immediate employment. They have probably been doing it for some time now.
So Senator McCain can rest assured that, when ordered by the National Command Authority, the armed forces will be able to carry out their mission. The President’s threat is not an empty one. Let’s not forget the short time interval between the provocative act and American response in Syria earlier this year.
I still hope the Chinese will do what is necessary but the completion of the nuclear weapon development cycle significantly increases the risk and cost of such an intervention. It now may be too late to solve this problem with conventional forces.
Please explain the logic. Oh, never mind. Republican party is so in need of members, they will take anyone if in a warm body. John will not be kicked out until the day he turns cold. THIS is the party in a nutshell (no pun intended)
