Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said on Sunday that the special counsel investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election needs permission from the Department of Justice to expand his investigation if he finds evidence of an unrelated crime.
In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russia's role in the 2016 campaign and President Donald Trump's campaign's potential ties to Russia was "not a fishing expedition."
"If he finds evidence of a crime that is within the scope of what Director Mueller and I have agreed is the appropriate scope of this investigation, then he can," Rosenstein said. "If it's something outside that scope he needs to come to the acting attorney general, at this time me, for permission to expand his investigation."

Don't "humiliate" the recuser. You're going to hurt his feelings.
>> Post #66 wasn’t describing distrust was it? <<
What difference, at this point, does it make?
Bupkis
Actually Rosenstein is saying he is the ‘Acting AG’, so where is AG Sessions? Why is there a need for an ‘Acting AG’...and what were Rosenstein and Sessions doing at Gitmo a few weeks ago, alone?
Reminds me of the old Mutual of Omaha Wild Kingdom show. While Jack Hanna went toe to toe with the wild animals, Marlin Perkins sat in the studio watching and hoping for the best. Trump is Jack Hanna and the recuser is Marlin Perkins.
IMHO, the Deep Staters are worried that Jeff SESSIONS WILL NAME A SPECIAL PROSECUTOR TO INVESTIGATE THE CLINTON/LYNCH COLLUSION 7 RUSSIAN CONNECTION AND THE WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ FOREIGN ESPIONAGE BUSINESS. This statement that Mueller’s investigation is limited is a FALSEHOOD TO MAKE SESSIONS MORE COMFORTABLE/CALM WITH MUELLER’S ACTIVITIES.
He’s in a coma.
Sessions had better name a special prosecutor... it’s way past just investigating this thing... put some worry into obama, hillary and bill, lynch and the rest of that ugly bunch.. let them know their incessant investigating of Trump is the reason they were not put to rest or let off the hook! They had some gall to keep pressing when they KNEW there were crimes on their side... they figure we never do anything so they were safe? or they figure they could outsmart this side? or they don’t care about hillary or obama?
We HAVE to start playing like we want to win this country back to its greatness!! Get em’!
By Rosenstein’s logic, any expansion of the investigation beyond Russian collusion would require acting AG permission — BUT, if that expansion goes beyond Russian collusion, then it would require AG Sessions’ approval as it would go beyond Sessions’ recusal on Russian/campaign related matters, including so-called “obstruction” charges.
I’m seeing this as result of pressure by POTUS.
But first the head guy had to move out of the way... Would have been pretty messy if Sessions was the one appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Trump...
As we seem to all understand, this is an illegal investigation since there was no crime committed...Sessions is still the boss (on paper anyway)...He could have stopped this special prosecutor in his tracks...And instead gone after Comey for leaking classified inforation to the press...But he didn't...
The miniseries House of Cards wasn’t as bad as reality. WDC is a corruption cesspool that overflows daily.
Sessions could point out the problems with Rosenstein’s authorization. He won’t.
I had high hopes for him and he may be a good man, but he’s not the man for this job. I wish him well but he’s gotta go.
After months of leaks he comes up with a policy review? Ya gotta be kiddin.
I have read after Rosenstein made this comment today that it is too late. The actual piece of paper he signed was overly broad and allows Mueller almost unlimited scope. Rosenstein made a mistake.
Don’t be naïve.
The Special Counsel is already existing contrary to law. There is no crime being investigated. The law for the creation of a SC requires that there be a crime to investigate. An allegation is not a crime nor is it evidence of a crime and is insufficient.
“”If he finds evidence of a crime that is within the scope of what Director Mueller and I have agreed is the appropriate scope of this investigation””
That certainly leaves a lot of wiggle room, doesn’t it?
To ask the question is to answer it.
Suppose for 20 seconds that Donald Trump was colluding with Vlad the Invader during the 2016 campaign. While I would consider that a legitimate matter for impeachment, I have yet to hear anyone explain just what provisions of the U.S. Code would have been violated.
Don't you find it pathetic that I still have to remind people of this right here on FreeRepublic even in August of 2017?
“Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein said special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation of Russia’s role in the 2016 campaign and President Donald Trump’s campaign’s potential ties to Russia was “not a fishing expedition.” “
Why no, it’s just a rectal exam of Trump and anyone around him to see if he did anything wrong without the slightest objective allegation that any crime of any kind has ever occurred. Who could ever call THAT a fishing expedition?
In other news the FBI will be investigating a bank robbery in a town where there isn’t the slightest proof that a bank robbery ever occurred.
