Chargers players finding tough time to rent in Irvine, CA

Black residents of Irvine? They’re virtually nonexistent. Yet, even if Mebane had known the African-American population in Irvine was 1.8 percent, he wouldn’t have been concerned. He was a football player with multiple multimillion-dollar contracts behind him.

“For us,” Mebane said, “it was just find the right place where we would be comfortable.”

The signs that renting a home in Irvine could be a problem came early.

Mebane’s Realtor took him and his wife to several homes, only to face icy receptions. During one visit, Mebane extended his hand to greet an owner who extended his in return — while turning his head away.

“You could feel the tension without people saying anything, and you could just tell they didn’t want us there,” Mebane said. “They were probably surprised that we were African-Americans, and they bought into all the negative stereotypes.”

Mebane and his wife eventually fell in love with a home that was right across the street from a park, which was perfect for their kids, 3-year-old Mahailey and 1-year-old Makai.

They set out to put together the rental application, with Amena, a lawyer, looking over all the details. Their credit score, in the 800s, was excellent. They amassed multiple recommendation letters that praised their character.

The Mebanes were turned down. The reason they were given?

“They told us the other applicant had a credit score that was four points higher,” Mebane said, rolling his eyes. “You can’t say we won’t rent to you because you’re black, because you’ll get sued. I know the real reason. I could handle it better if the people were just honest.”

Irvine? FGS it is the socialist lib bastion of the OC!
They are ALL about diversity. Smell BS on this story... btw I live in the north OC....we are quite diverse and thankfully still holding on to conservative.

Bull bleepin poop. Plenty of wealthy blacks in OC. Tustin hills, Anaheim Hills, Newport area, come ON. Irvine is more Asian than any other race. My son’s best friend is AA and lives in Huntington Beach. OC is far from lily white.

A racism agenda, looking for a story.

Unless the Asians in Irvine don’t care for Africans Americans.

So the Asians are as racist as the Whites. It is unfortunate that good people suffer unjustly because of the actions of others. There was a reason I did not do a Section 8 rental. Was it fair? Maybe not. Was it necessary, absolutely.

So they should choose one with a lower credit score or they are racist? Got it.

It is Irvine; someone having a credit score 4 points higher is pretty common. I can only hope that there’s some recourse for the landlords to sue the bums for defamation.

If they're "negative stereotypes," then why did HE buy into them by avoiding majority-Black towns and moving into a 90% WHITE area?

Santa Ana had a fair sized black community in the ‘60s. Eventually the tsunami of illegal immigration drove them out. There were black families in Tustin with MCAS El Toro. OC was largely white because most aerospace engineers were white and OC was where many of them lived, in the distant past when SoCal had an aerospace industry and OC hadn’t become a colony of the 3rd world.

Considering how multi-culti Irvine is I wouldn’t be surprised if the anti-black faction are mostly recent immigrants. Because that’s what a large part of Irvine’s population is.

This I can believe. My ire was at the slant of the article, as if it were the old whitey racism.

I’m wondering why they are renting ? they seem to be able to afford to buy.

NFL players get traded, injured, cut or move due to free agency frequently. I believe the home owner doesn't want to rent to families like this NOT because their are black, but because they are football players. BlackElk (R.I.P.) used to dabble in the rental game in New Haven, CT, and besides the regular drug dealers and gang members, the worst tenants he knew of (not his) were professional Jai Alai players. Jai Alai players are not black, but they are young, their money is new, and they tended to spend their time partying at high volume and tearing up the front lawn with ATVs, a general nuisance. This NFL players is likely a better bet if he has a wife and children, but the rest still applies, including the resources to make legal problems if you have a disagreement.

More #FakeNews. This has to have been invented because Trump is in office. I would have rented a property to the first person with a credit score in the 800s, without waiting for another one with a score “4 points higher”. Any sensible owner would have done so.

Yeah but those “4 points higher” allow him to imply that the landlord is racist. Being completely unverifiable is an added bonus.
