Again you’re confusing actions that MacArthur wanted to take after the Chinese sent 300,000 troops into North Korea and attacked US troops. They committed an act of war and MacArthur was responding in the appropriate manner.

Throw a baseball straight up in the air. Now throw it for distance. The higher you can throw it in the first instance means that you can throw it much, much further in the second.

Essentially, the Norks are shooting almost straight up. It’s a relatively simple calculation to figure out how much velocity & total thrust they are generating.

And while these tests do not carry a warhead they are almost certainly carrying a dummy payload matching the design weight of their projected (or current) warhead design. That is what the underground tests are moving toward.

He forgot one of the main military maxims: It is easier to get forgiveness than permission. Do the right thing, then deal with the consequences.

Mac didn’t control the airforce. Truman refused to blow the bridges for several days after the Chinese were attacking US troops as well. Given that Truman lost China by stabbing them in the back, and tried to give northern japan to Russia, I don’t think that was an accident on his part.

I’m not confusing actions. Nevertheless, Mac wanted to expand the war by crossing into China which would have opened a whole new set of dynamics including a mobilization on par with WWII which would have included calling up tens of thousands of WWII vets. Five years after WWII, vets were busy with building careers, families, homes, raising kids and were in no mood to fight another war. Btw, Mac did propose crossing the Yalu to destroy supply depots prior to the Chinese invasion but the JCS would not approve it. So, there you have it.

The only reference I found to MacArthur urging attacks on Chinese positions was bombing the bridges between North Korea and China before they could bring in supplies and their army. Truman refused him.

Sigh... You can't prove a negative Grasshopper. I'll say this about Mac and then I'm through. Like most people he made some good decisions and made some bad ones. His biggest bad one was the Philippine Invasion which was motivated by his hubris and infinite ego. His decision to do the Incheon Landing was brilliant, mainly because it worked. But, in the end his hubris and political ambition got the best of him and did him in. Whether you agree or not with Trumans actions toward Mac, civilian rule of our military is sacrosanct. So,Truman had no choice but to can Mac. Almost forgot; Mac did a superb job administering post-war Japan, installing democracy, rebuilding their industrial base. One of the smartest things he did in this regard was bringing over Edwards Deming. Btw, my dad was one of those who after serving in North Africa and Europe was recalled fro Korea. As I recall from his stories he wasn't too happy about it but he went and did his duty. I'm old enough to remember the WWII and Korea vets talk about Dugout Doug at family get togethers and such and none had much good to say about him. Just as a side note I'm a Vietnam vet. Also, have traveled extensively in Asia and the fam and I lived in Shanghai for two years as an expat work assignment. So, I have some personal knowledge about Asia.
