North Korea Says Successful ICBM Test Shows U.S. Is In Striking Distance

The U.S. Department of Defense says the missile, which launched just before midnight local time, traveled roughly 620 miles — from the country's northern province of Jagang to the Sea of Japan, where it finally splashed into the waters off Japan's west coast.

There have been no immediate reports of damage, and Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis says the North American Aerospace Defense Command "determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America."

In response to the launch, the Pentagon announced that it had conducted a precision missile firing exercise with South Korea.

President Trump released a statement calling the launch "only the latest reckless and dangerous action by the North Korean regime."

...

"It does appear that at a minimum this missile may go up to 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles), but it may go as far as 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles)," Melissa Hanham, senior research associate with the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute, tells NPR's Robert Siegel.

"And that puts all of the West Coast and the Midwest in range at 10,000 kilometers," Hanham adds, "and at 11,000 kilometers, pretty much every U.S. state but Florida is in range."

...

North Korea is "the single most dangerous threat facing the international community right now," Gen. Mark Milley, the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, told the National Press Club on Thursday. "It is clear, based on [the ICBM launch] over the July 4 weekend, that North Korea has advanced significantly and quicker than many had expected."

He added that North Korea's military threat is "the one thing I'm worried about."

>Read more history books.

I’ve read tons. Never seen one where MacArthur was planning to advance into China before the Chinese attacked us.

Again you’re confusing actions that MacArthur wanted to take after the Chinese sent 300,000 troops into North Korea and attacked US troops. They committed an act of war and MacArthur was responding in the appropriate manner.

NK is a cat’s paw of China. I think it should be understood that an NK strike on the USA would result in an all out strike on China, without delay or restraint.

Um yes. And just wow. I caught this posted on twitter after just 8 minutes from posting and at least 10 different news agencies.

Turned on the tv where I was and nothing for many hours on any cable news channel. How does that happen? Not even a scrolling line below.

Truman was a traitor. MacArthur knew this which is why he kept his attack plans secret.

> Until very recently this filament wrapping was considered beyond DPRK capabilities. I think it’s still beyond it. The Chinese or the Russians are helping them.

Bingo.

Throw a baseball straight up in the air. Now throw it for distance. The higher you can throw it in the first instance means that you can throw it much, much further in the second.

Essentially, the Norks are shooting almost straight up. It’s a relatively simple calculation to figure out how much velocity & total thrust they are generating.

And while these tests do not carry a warhead they are almost certainly carrying a dummy payload matching the design weight of their projected (or current) warhead design. That is what the underground tests are moving toward.

A very late interception? Put a little scare into the snowflakes? That may be what it takes.

Risk vs. reward is the consideration. A miss in that case is not an acceptable risk. Eff the snowflakes!

But are you aware that Mac urged Truman to blow up the bridges between China and North Korea to prevent a massive Chinese invasion?

He forgot one of the main military maxims: It is easier to get forgiveness than permission. Do the right thing, then deal with the consequences.

Mac didn’t control the airforce. Truman refused to blow the bridges for several days after the Chinese were attacking US troops as well. Given that Truman lost China by stabbing them in the back, and tried to give northern japan to Russia, I don’t think that was an accident on his part.

He wants the Pacific fleet in San Diego. After that DC and then New York City.

I’m not confusing actions. Nevertheless, Mac wanted to expand the war by crossing into China which would have opened a whole new set of dynamics including a mobilization on par with WWII which would have included calling up tens of thousands of WWII vets. Five years after WWII, vets were busy with building careers, families, homes, raising kids and were in no mood to fight another war. Btw, Mac did propose crossing the Yalu to destroy supply depots prior to the Chinese invasion but the JCS would not approve it. So, there you have it.

Prove it.

The only reference I found to MacArthur urging attacks on Chinese positions was bombing the bridges between North Korea and China before they could bring in supplies and their army. Truman refused him.

I already did and in fact I already gave you a history source with the information showing that you are in error about 5 posts ago: Start on page 240. http://www.history.army.mil/books/PD-C-13.HTM I can't tell if you're just a midwit unable to admit that you're wrong of if you're just unwilling to read the source material I proved it to backup my case.

Sigh... You can't prove a negative Grasshopper. I'll say this about Mac and then I'm through. Like most people he made some good decisions and made some bad ones. His biggest bad one was the Philippine Invasion which was motivated by his hubris and infinite ego. His decision to do the Incheon Landing was brilliant, mainly because it worked. But, in the end his hubris and political ambition got the best of him and did him in. Whether you agree or not with Trumans actions toward Mac, civilian rule of our military is sacrosanct. So,Truman had no choice but to can Mac. Almost forgot; Mac did a superb job administering post-war Japan, installing democracy, rebuilding their industrial base. One of the smartest things he did in this regard was bringing over Edwards Deming. Btw, my dad was one of those who after serving in North Africa and Europe was recalled fro Korea. As I recall from his stories he wasn't too happy about it but he went and did his duty. I'm old enough to remember the WWII and Korea vets talk about Dugout Doug at family get togethers and such and none had much good to say about him. Just as a side note I'm a Vietnam vet. Also, have traveled extensively in Asia and the fam and I lived in Shanghai for two years as an expat work assignment. So, I have some personal knowledge about Asia. Anyway, take care of yourself, it's been fun Grasshopper (Aesop) 😉.

After that DC and then New York City.

Puts my kids and one grandson at risk. Older son works in NYC; younger son, wife and newest grandbaby live and work in DC (within the crater resulting when the Iranian nuke in the basement of that big mosque near them blows).
