The U.S. Department of Defense says the missile, which launched just before midnight local time, traveled roughly 620 miles — from the country's northern province of Jagang to the Sea of Japan, where it finally splashed into the waters off Japan's west coast.
There have been no immediate reports of damage, and Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis says the North American Aerospace Defense Command "determined the missile launch from North Korea did not pose a threat to North America."
In response to the launch, the Pentagon announced that it had conducted a precision missile firing exercise with South Korea.
President Trump released a statement calling the launch "only the latest reckless and dangerous action by the North Korean regime."

"It does appear that at a minimum this missile may go up to 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles), but it may go as far as 11,000 kilometers (6,800 miles)," Melissa Hanham, senior research associate with the East Asia Nonproliferation Program at the Middlebury Institute, tells NPR's Robert Siegel.
"And that puts all of the West Coast and the Midwest in range at 10,000 kilometers," Hanham adds, "and at 11,000 kilometers, pretty much every U.S. state but Florida is in range."

North Korea is "the single most dangerous threat facing the international community right now," Gen. Mark Milley, the chief of staff of the U.S. Army, told the National Press Club on Thursday. "It is clear, based on [the ICBM launch] over the July 4 weekend, that North Korea has advanced significantly and quicker than many had expected."
He added that North Korea's military threat is "the one thing I'm worried about."

I’ve said it before and I steadfastly maintain that NK is a cat’s paw of China. I think it should be understood that an NK strike on the USA would result in an all out strike on China, without delay or restraint.

It’s been reported that the altitude was higher than the space station. ...Given the right trajectory from a very high altitude in space, gravity takes over when fuel is gone.
I think the tests have been to determine if the nose cones will survive re-entry through the atmosphere and deliver the package.

Exactly right. If NK were to launch something on a long range trajectory... Our satellites, radars, and computers are very good at determining impact points. If NK were to make a mistake (what are the chances, ha!) and their test shot was going to impact on the west coast.... Are you going to believe their frantic call that it is a mistake, that it is inert? Of course not. We’re going to shoot it down. Since interceptors are limited, we can’t afford to keep shooting them, so an integral part of defense is counterstrike. We would respond in kind , with WMDs, taking out at least that launch site, possibly several others. So NK is at least marginally smart by not shooting long range, risking an accident and nuclear destruction.
Think of it this way: Awkwardness aside, if I can throw a rock almost straight up, very high, I can also, if I choose, throw it a long horizontal distance by altering my release angle to, say, 40 degrees.
Given the energy in the booster, one has a range of solutions / options.
Strictly speaking, if bottle rockets are legal where you live, you can demonstrate the same thing with them. :-)

Umm, one of the greatest generals? MacArthur? I don’t think so. Truman had no choice but to fire Dugout Dug. He was an egomaniac who was not only ignoring Truman but Truman’s Joint Chief of Staff as well. He was about to take the U.S. into a war with China that we were not prepared to fight and had no desire to fught so soon after WWII. Bringing this discussion forward to today; other than some special op’s insertions there will be no large military operations on the Asia mainland. To do so would play right into North Korea’s and certainly China’s wheelhouse. To entice the U.S. to fight a traditional land war of big divisions against big divisions would be an answer to their wildest wettest dreams. Ain’t gonna happen.

MacArthur is the reason Japan didn’t end up half Communist. Truman instructed MacArthur to prepare to give the northern half the country to Russia. MacArthur leaked it to the press to prevent it. Harry Truman was a damn Communist sympathizer.

China attacked us. It was cowardly and cost us a lot of men not to use air power to knock China out of the war. I think the real reason we failed to do so was Truman’s support of the Communist Chinese.

The history that people think they know tends to be official history they learned from school and official history tends to be written by leftists, progressives, and communists because those 3 groups control the press, education, and Hollywood. I seem like a bomb thrower because I’ve read a lot more than just official history and thus have a very different perspective.

I can just imagine he had a wet dream of secretly hiding several of these missiles and launchers inside a cargo ship or even an old tanker, manages to get far closer to US interests and launches, this almost reminds me of back in 1961, though i was very young i do remember it.Sadly most people are far too interested in stupid minuscule social issues.
I hope Kim launches and maybe the first intercept goes off not right, the second, well maybe it will.....but what if it actually gets very very close say to San Diego or Hawaii...

I will acknowledge that the Chinese “attacked us” by crossing Yalu River. But, Mac had advance troops right up to the river and was making it publically known that he wanted to cross into China. He also was publically making it known that he wanted to use nukes. Consequently, the Chinese considered all this as a threat and attacked. And, in very short order rolled up the 1st Cav who was previously an occupation force division in Japan and was ill equipped to fight a shooting war with the Chinese. As a side note, The Cav lost its colors in disgrace as was thereby not allowed to return to the U.S. after the war. When the 1st Cav was sent to Nam it wasn’t the actual unit, just the colors. It was actually the 10th Air Assualt and 2nd Infantry Division that shipped over. The 1st Cav and the 2nd Infantry swapped colors. But, I degree. My bad :)

You’re going to have to back that statement up. That’s not in any of the history books I’ve read.

After China attacked us. He wanted to Nuke China’s port cities to get them to pull their troops back. According to a book written by Mao’s personal physician: “The Private Life of Chairman Mao” Mao at the time indicated that he would have pulled back if mainland China had been attacked via air power. They simply had no defenses against it. They were delighted when Truman cucked out.

Sure did. But are you aware that Mac urged Truman to blow up the bridges between China and North Korea to prevent a massive Chinese invasion? Truman refused and we lost a lot of men because of that decision. Funny how leftist historians always blame Mac for a mistake that Truman made.
